Read moreThese two scholarships work together to support an excellent student in the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment. The 1968 Singapore Colombo Plan Students Scholarship supports a worthy student in the 2nd year of a program with the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment. Should the student achieve the required results, the scholar will at the beginning of 3rd year be required to submit an essay on Singapore. If this is of an acceptable standard the scholar will automatically be given the 1968 Singapore Colombo Plan Students (Memorial) Scholarship to support 3rd year of their degree studies. The 1968 Singapore Colombo Plan Students Scholarship was established in 2008 by a group of Colombo Plan Students from Singapore who studied at the University of Newcastle from 1968 in the Faculty of Engineering, as it was then known. On the 40th anniversary of their first entering the University of Newcastle, and at a very different stage of their lives, the donors decided to establish a Scholarship to commemorate the fond and happy memories of their stay at Newcastle and to show their appreciation to the Australian and Newcastle community who helped them with their University education during their tender and formative years. Three of the original donors on seeing the benefit of the scholarship decided in 2010 to establish the 1968 Singapore Colombo Plan Students (Memorial) Scholarship which would allow them to continue to support the student in third year engineering, subject to meeting eligibility requirements. | $8,000 | Apply

We do this by using science to solve real issues to unlock a better future for our community, our economy, our planet. To be a truly diverse organisation we need to reflect the diversity that we see in society. We need the skills and knowledge to innovate for tomorrow and an understanding of today’s big questions and how they affect everyone. However, women still hold far fewer leadership positions than men particularly in STEM fields where only 18 per cent of leadership positions are held by women. Read moreThe intention of the scholarship is that it will support an Honours candidate whose project involves ecology, identification or illustration of native flora, thus aligned with the goals of The Don McNair Herbarium. Dr Donald McNair, DSc honoris causa, University of Newcastle, lived his entire life in Newcastle. He combined a career as an auto-electrician with an extraordinary passion for plant taxonomy and ecology. He collected plant specimens within the Hunter Region, throughout NSW and interstate. His botanical training was formalized in the late 1950's by undertaking courses offered by The University of Newcastle, the Workers Education Association (WEA) and through interactions with plant taxonomists at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney. Don McNair's legacy to teaching and research is the donation of his herbarium now comprising 14,000 specimens to The University of Newcastle. The Don McNair Herbarium was formally opened in 2003 and Don and his volunteers worked to maintain and expand the collections until his death in 2014. He believed that his collection "will be vital in recording environmental and plant changes, particularly in response to climate change". His donation of the Herbarium and this scholarship was designed to foster postgraduate research in plant taxonomy, ecology and botanical illustration. Read moreThis scholarship was established by Helen Maslen to support students who are survivors of domestic violence, empowering them to achieve their education ambitions and independence. Helen grew up in Sydney and married young. In the ensuing twenty years she had five children and was the victim of repeated domestic violence at the hands of her husband. With no support, no finances and five children to care for, Helen had no-where to go in a time when domestic violence was very much swept under the carpet and authorities had no power to intervene. Helen vowed, should she ever come into money, she would use it to help others who have also been traumatised by domestic violence. Helen hopes that her scholarship will empower survivors by providing opportunity through education – giving domestic violence survivors strength, independence and the ability to achieve their dreams. The impacts of domestic violence can be felt many years post violence and may affect the survivor’s ability to study. Research data shows that significant recovery can occur when the survivor has access to social, educational or financial support such as this scholarship. Some survivors may describe their experiences as being both negative and positive in terms of the strength and empowerment gained in the survival process. Accessing higher education and support available can contribute to this important positive sense of surviving. | $5,000 | Apply

Read moreJoy Ingall (née Davis) demonstrated a natural talent for the piano early in her life. Her aptitude and dedication, coupled with her mother's support, saw her graduate from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with Diploma and Licentiate Certificates. Her ability was also recognised by the ABC, who featured her in radio broadcasts. Joy pursed her musical studies in the UK, eventually meeting and marrying her husband there. Returning to Australia, she raised six children and as a result, her musical career receded into the background. However, there were still occasional performances at public gatherings, such as parties and meetings of the Labour party. It was at one such function that she met Norman Bushman who, with his passion for music, recognised her talent and encouraged her to pursue her musical career. As a first step, she began giving lessons and played a key role in nurturing many fine musicians. Sadly, she succumbed to cancer before she could fulfill all her dreams and the hopes of supporters like Mr Bushman. Out of a deep respect for her dedication and musicianship, Norman Bushman took on the support of her family and made a commitment to keeping her memory alive. This scholarship provides tangible evidence of his commitment. For more information on this scholarship, please review the full Terms and Conditions. | $60,000 | Apply

The succe... Read moreIt is the intention of these scholarships to support students undertaking an honours design research project into the role that user centred design research can play in understanding and communicating healthy lifestyle behaviours. The successful recipients will be offered the opportunity to participant in a joint UON/NIB project which can be used as the project required as a part of the curriculum for their DESN4215, DESN4220, DESN4230, DESN4240 subjects. These scholarships were established by nib to support initiatives that have a positive and lasting impact on nationwide health issues and sees user centred design research as central to solving the complex social problems these health issues represent. nib knows there is a nationwide shortage of user centred designers in Australia and recognises that the University of Newcastle's Bachelor of Visual Communication and Bachelor of Visual Communication Honours programs are addressing these critical skills shortages. nib is offering these scholarships to assist the UoN in fostering those skills at the honours level in the Bachelor of Visual Communication Honours degree. Specifically, these scholarships are for students undertaking an honours design research project into the timing and communication of health care advice. Escalating health care costs are often associated with the poor timing or poor communication of this advice. This project seeks to understand some of the impediments to patients seeking timely medical advice and the impediments to good communication associated with it. It is anticipated that understanding the behaviour of both proactive health consumers and passive health consumers may inform the design of strategies to encourage the latter to take a more proactive approach to their health care. The framing questions used in this research may include (but are not limited to the following:What are the typical characteristics of proactive health consumers? How do proactive health consumers access health information and judge its credibility? Why do people do the wrong things in relation to their health? How do we design touch points that will be viewed as credible and empower people to take responsibility for their health? Recipients of these scholarships will be offered the non-compulsory opportunity to undertake their honours design research project as a combined work integrated learning placement at nib and attendance at relevant university classes. This project will use a joint supervisory model with a supervisory team consisting of 1 x principal supervisor from UoN and 1 x associate supervisor from nib. Formal weekly joint supervisory meetings, typically 1 hour long, are to occur in both semesters. These may be held at UoN or nib as needs dictate. This does not preclude any additional informal supervision, advice, guidance or instruction being provided by the principal and/or associate supervisors. The independent research / learning may occur on campus, at the site of research (nib), and other research sites to be determined by the requirements of the specific research project developed. Students will attend all required classes for the Bachelor of Visual Communication Design (Honours) as per the timetabled schedule. Semester 1 involves 3 hours per week of classes and a 1 hour per week supervisory meeting. Semester 2 involves 2 hours per fortnight of classes and a 1 hour per week supervisory meeting. | $12,000 | Apply

Read moreThe Singapore Alumni Scholarship was established in 2011 by a committee of Singapore Alumni, chaired by Dr Peter Tay. This Singapore Alumni Scholarship Committee initiated fund-raising from Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents who studied at the University of Newcastle. It is the intent that these scholarships be used to assist gifted students who are overcoming adversity to study at the University of Newcastle. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must be academically gifted but are also facing hardship from factors such as being from a low socio-economic background, coming from a rural or remote area, living with disabilities, or carer and/or parenting responsibilities. Donations for this Singapore Alumni Scholarship have come from Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents who are UON Alumni. These individuals take great pride in the achievements of Singapore and value their relationship with UON. They hope that this Scholarship will further strengthen the relationship between Singapore and Australia. The University of Newcastle expects beneficiaries of this Scholarship to respect the values and aspirations of those who have made this very generous donation. The history of the Singapore Alumni Scholarships would not be complete without a special mention of UON alumnus and generous donor, Dr Peter Tay, who was instrumental in the establishment, governance and fundraising of the Singapore Alumni Scholarship Fund that supports these scholarships. Peter showed exceptional leadership with his peer-to-peer fundraising efforts and from 2011 until today, Peter has tirelessly rallied his fellow Singapore alumni from UON to donate towards the Fund. After three fund-raising campaigns, the Singapore Alumni Scholarship Fund needed A$170,000 to reach its target. Peter spearheaded a Golden Jubilee campaign, as part of the 50th anniversary of the University in 2015. That goal was achieved and surpassed, and the fund has now reached over A$500,000 and can support at least five students each year. Peter continues to consistently update his fellow Singapore Alumni on the Fund, showing them the impact that their donations is making to students in need. Students applying for this scholarship should also consider applying for the Shaping Futures Scholarship. Past recipients of the Singapore Alumni Scholarship may consider applying for the Catherine and Peter Tay for Singapore Alumni (follow on) Scholarship. Applicable to all study levels and undergraduate programs, international and domestic students, equity, financial disadvantage, rural, regional, remote, Indigenous Australian. | $4,000 | Apply
