This scholarship has been established using funds left to the University by the late Beryl Robinson in her Will. Mrs Robinson and her husband, Francois, wished to provide support to students from Tomaree High School to study Mathematics, Japanese, Indonesian or Chinese languages at the University of Newcastle.
This scholarship provides sustained support for undergraduate students undertaking mathematics and approved language study at the University of Newcastle. It offers tuition fee coverage and support for required textbooks for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Mathematics or Bachelor of Mathematics (Advanced) (including combined degrees), and targeted tuition support for approved mathematics and language units for students enrolled in other undergraduate degrees.

Applicable to Tomaree High School, mathematics, Japanese language, Indonesian language Chinese language, full or part-time study permitted.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you will need to:
- Have completed Year 12 at Tomaree High School, NSW.
- Be enrolled in the Bachelor of Mathematics or Bachelor of Mathematics (Advanced), or be studying mathematics (MATH) and/or Japanese, Indonesian or Chinese language courses/units within another undergraduate program (incl Diploma of Languages).
- Be enrolled either full-time or part-time.
- Demonstrate the impact of educational disadvantage such as carer and sole parent responsibilities, financial hardship, a long-term medical condition or disability, the ongoing effects of abuse, regional/remote disadvantage, or applicant attributes such as being an Indigenous Australian, having a Refugee background, or placement with an Out-of-Home Care provider.
- Demonstrate academic progress by the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent required for entry for commencing students, or a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 for continuing students (evidence not required for current UON students).
- Not have previously received this award.
Required Documentation
Required documents will be listed on the ‘Your Documents’ page of your application. The application portal accepts PDF only. A maximum of 3 PDF smaller than 5 MB can be added per document type upload field.
- A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you. This statement will cover all scholarships you are submitting for.
- Evidence of Year 12 completion at Tomaree High School such as your HSC testamur or record or achievement.
Benefit
The value of this scholarship will vary depending on the recipient’s program of study.
For students enrolled in the Bachelor of Mathematics or Bachelor of Mathematics (Advanced) (including combined degrees), the scholarship covers full tuition fees for all courses within the degree.
For students enrolled in other undergraduate programs, the scholarship covers tuition fees for mathematics (MATH) and approved language units (Japanese, Indonesian or Chinese) only, where those units are taken as core or elective subjects within the standard duration of the degree. Tuition for courses outside these disciplines is not covered.
Tuition funds will be applied directly to the recipient’s student account at the relevant census date each term, following confirmation of enrolment in eligible courses. Please note that late enrolments may impact our ability to arrange this payment.
An approved portion of the scholarship benefit may also be used to reimburse the cost of required or recommended textbooks for eligible courses. This is subject to approval and the provision of receipts. Textbook reimbursement is capped at a total of $2,000 each year of the scholarship and will be paid directly to the recipient.
Selection
Selection for this scholarship is undertaken by Scholarships staff and does not require a formal selection panel; however, the scholarship is highly competitive and based on a thorough assessment of each application, considering all eligibility criteria.
Scholarships staff will assess applications in the following order of priority:
- Fulfilment of all eligibility criteria.
- Evidence of educational disadvantage.
- Academic merit may be considered where relevant.
