Shamila, Ravendra and Roneal Naidu Scholarship

Establishment

This scholarship was established by Shamila and Ravendra Naidu in memory of their only child, the late Dr Roneal Naidu.

As a medical doctor, Roneal knew many patients and fellow health carers who had dreams for their children’s success in life, although they often lacked the resources to achieve this.

With his early departure from life, this scholarship aims to deliver Roneal’s vision, as well as that of his parents Shamila and Ravendra Naidu.

Born in Fiji and migrating to Australia, the family knows well the hard work and commitment it takes to achieve success on limited resources.

Shamila and Ravendra hope that this scholarship will provide students facing similar challenges with the opportunity, through higher education, to build a platform for their future success, independence, and the fulfillment of their dreams.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you will need to:

  • Be enrolled in any year of an undergraduate program with the University of Newcastle.
  • Be enrolled full-time.
  • Demonstrate the impact of educational disadvantage such as carer and sole parent responsibilities, financial hardship, long-term medical condition, a disability, the ongoing effects of abuse, regional/remote disadvantage, English language difficulty.
  • Equity scholarships will also consider applicant attributes such as being an Indigenous Australian, having a Refugee background, or placement with an Out-of-Home Care provider.
  • Demonstrate academic progress with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 or higher and maintain this for the duration of scholarship.
  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident (including New Zealand Permanent Residents) or have refugee status
  • Not be the recipient of another University of Newcastle donor-funded or sponsored scholarship concurrently.

Required Documentation

Required documents will be listed on the ‘Your Documents’ page of your application. The application portal accepts PDF only. A maximum of 3 PDF smaller than 5 MB can be added per document type upload field.

  • A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you. This statement will cover all scholarships you are submitting for.
  • You may be required to provide documents to support your educational disadvantage claims. These will be identified when you apply based on your individual application responses.

Benefit

This scholarship is ongoing for the remaining length of the program up to a maximum term of 4 years provided ongoing eligibility. This scholarship must be taken up in the year for which it is awarded.

The scholarship provides a total benefit of $32,000 over the full 4-year tenure provided ongoing eligibility for the term of the scholarship.

The scholarship will be paid $4000 each semester after the relevant census dates (usually in April and September).

The scholarship benefit and number of scholarships awarded may vary and will be determined by the funding available each year.

Selection

Selection is a competitive process and will be based on an assessment of the scholarship application and any required supporting documents, with reference to the eligibility criteria. Preference will be given to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

The recipient will be determined by the Scholarships Officer on the basis of equity assessment and all applicants notified of an outcome within 6 weeks of the scholarship close date.
