Establishment

This Scholarship was established in 2013 by Tarek Nashar, who wished to establish a scholarship to honour the significant contribution of his mother Professor Beryl Nashar to Geology, as the first Professor of Geology at the University of Newcastle. The scholarship has been established to encourage and reward a student who has excelled in their third year Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science (Advanced) and is undertaking the Bachelor of Science (Honours) program in the Discipline of Chemistry.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you will need to:

  • Be undertaking the Bachelor of Science (Honours) program in the discipline of Chemistry.
  • Have studied the Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science (Advanced) with the University of Newcastle for the full duration of the program.
  • Be enrolled either full-time or part-time.
  • Demonstrate academic achievement by a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 6.0 or higher in your current program. Please note, evidence is not required with your application as we will use University records.
  • Be an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident (including holders of a permanent humanitarian visa and New Zealand citizens with permanent residency).

Benefit

The scholarship provides a total benefit of $1,000, paid as a lump sum in Semester 1.

Payments are typically received 2–3 weeks after the semester census date, or 2–3 weeks after you accept your offer if the census date has already passed.


Selection

No application is required for this scholarship.

Selection will be conducted by the Scholarships Officer in conjunction with the Head of Chemistry Discipline and Office of Philanthropy.

Selection will be based on a review of academic transcripts of students meeting the eligibility criteria. The scholarship will be awarded to the student with the best performance in their prior Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science (Advanced) program, and who meets the other criteria of this scholarship. In addition to the Cumulative Grade Point Average of 6.0, selection will consider:

  • Achievement of a Distinction grade or higher in every subject of third-year Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science (Advanced), with at least 50% of those results at High Distinction; and
  • An academic record with no recorded Fail results within the program preceding Honours study.

Participation in the Discipline of Chemistry for the Honours project will be verified by the Head of Chemistry Discipline.
