Description

Visual Communication Design (VisComm) is part of an exciting media industry that rewards your imagination, creativity and visual expertise. Specialised creative art and design skills are employed in a range of careers such as graphic design, app design, illustration, concept art, games design, web design, typography, animation, advertising, UX design, service design, wayfinding, interaction design and visual storytelling. In this degree you gain a solid grounding in the fundamentals of visual communication design and creative arts, as well as choosing to develop your passion and technical skills in areas of focus such as; Animation & Interaction, Graphic Communication &  Illustration and Creative Arts.

Students have the option of completing a single or a double major in this program. Students completing a double major can choose either a double major from the Visual Communication Design Major options (Double Major Pathway B); or one Visual Communication Design Major and one School of Creative Industries (SOCI)  Major (Double Major Pathway C) from the options listed in the handbook. The most ideal combinations of majors that reflect industry creative practice for Visual Communication Design Graduates are listed below;

This program can be completed in three years. However, students completing either of the double Major options, should be aware that due to course availability, the duration of their program may be extended. Students undertaking a double Major option are advised to consult with their Program Advisor regarding their academic program.

Program requirements

Students must complete 240 units consisting of 80 units of Core courses and at least one Visual Communication Design Major:

  • Animation and Interaction
  • Creative Arts
  • Graphic Design and Illustration

Students can choose from one of the following structures:

  • Single Major Pathway A: 80 units of Core Courses, and one 80 unit Visual Communication Design Major (20 units at 1000 level, 20 units at 2000 level, and 40 units at 3000 level) and 80 units of Electives; or
  • Double Major Pathway B: 80 units of Core Courses, and two 80 unit Visual Communication Design Majors, with 20 units at 1000 level, 20 units at 2000 level, and 40 units at 3000 level in each major. As DESN1031 is a common compulsory course across the Visual Communication Design majors, students must undertake an additional 10 units chosen from the directed course lists or electives; or
  • Double Major Pathway C - 80 units of Core Courses, and one 80 unit Visual Communication Design Major (20 units at 1000 level, 20 units at 2000 level, and 40 units at 3000 level); and one 80 unit School of Creative Industries Major (20 units at 1000 level, 20 units at 2000 level, and 40 units at 3000 level).

School of Creative Industries Major options for the second major in Double Major Pathway C are:

  • Media Arts Production
  • Public Relations
  • Songwriting and Production

Students must ensure that each Major has a minimum of 60 units of unique courses.

Students must not exceed 240 units in order to complete a second major.

Students must not exceed a maximum of 100 units at the 1000 level.

Students must only complete courses that form part of the program and must not complete more than 240 units.

Transition arrangements

Program Revisions 2021

This program has been revised for implementation from Semester 1 2021.

  • There are significant changes to the core courses and the majors in the program.
  • Courses completed pre-2021 will count towards the program; however, you must refer to the transition arrangements in the Additional Documents Section for more details.

There are no changes to the structure of the program.  Students must complete:

  • 80 units of Core courses; and
  • One 80 unit Visual Communication Design Major; and
  • 80 units of Electives (the Electives can be used to complete a second 80 unit Major).

From 2021, the following changes will apply:

  • Visual Communication Design Majors
    • The Animation has been replaced with the Animation and Interaction major.
    • A Creative Arts major has been introduced.
    • The Interaction and UX Design major has been removed from the program.
    • The Graphic Communication and Typography major has been replaced with the Graphic Design and Illustration major.
    • The Illustration major has been removed from the program.
  • School of Creative Industries Majors
    • The Experience Creation major has been removed from the program.
    • The Media Production major has been renamed Media Arts Production.
    • The Public Relations and Strategic Communications major has been renamed Public Relations and introduced as a new SOCI major.
    • The Songwriting and Production major has been introduced as a new SOCI major.
