Program handbook

Description

This program provides students with an opportunity to undertake concurrent study in Civil Engineering and Business and complete two awards. In general, this program offers greater breadth of learning, enhancing the academic and professional qualities gained in each separate degree. At the same time, it recognises the increasing need for students to graduate with multidisciplinary skills. Students develop skills in the design and building of large scale projects such as roads, bridges, airports, major buildings and water supply systems whilst also gaining skills for work in many areas of business, and the opportunity to progress in a business management career.

Program learning outcomes

On successful completion of the program students will have:

  • Program Learning Outcomes as per those for the single degree programs.

Program requirements

For all combined programs and in accordance with the Program Management Procedure Manual - Coursework, the core and minimum requirements for each single degree component must be met in each combined program. This has been done economically, exploiting overlaps where possible, so that accreditation of either program is not compromised.

The Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of Business is a five year program, students are required to complete a total of 410 units, which is comprised of:

  • 320 units of core courses;
  • 20 units of design project courses;
  • 10 units of project core courses; and
  • 60 units towards a Business major (20 units of Core courses also count towards the major for a total of 80 units). Students may choose either:

The majors available in this combined degree are:

  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation; or
  • Leadership and Management

Step-out Information

The program has a duration of 5 years full time (or part time equivalent). It is possible for a student to 'step out' with a single degree award only and not complete the combined program they are enrolled in. In order to do this, a student would be required to complete all the single degree requirements for their preferred degree and may be required to complete any omitted courses that are not included in the combined degree.

Omitted Courses:

  • Bachelor of Business core course STAT1060 Business Decision Making (10 units) has been omitted from the program.

A student wishing to 'step out' with a single degree from this combined program should contact their Program Convenor or Program Advisor (ProgramAdvice@newcastle.edu.au) for further information.

Physics Pathways

Students may choose to undertake PHYS1210 Advanced Physics 1 in lieu of PHYS1205 with Program Convenor approval. Additionally, students who have completed PHYS1210 and have transferred to a program that requires PHYS1205 can count PHYS1210 in lieu of PHYS1205.

  • Students wishing to undertake this program on a part-time basis are advised to contact the Program Convenor or Program Advisor (ProgramAdvice@newcastle.edu.au) for advice on optimum selection of courses for part-time enrolment.
  • Please note that if you undertake courses that are not in your approved program, you will be liable for additional fees for those courses. This is in addition to the fees associated with your normal program of study.
