Non-award and cross-institutional study

The University of Newcastle offer hundreds of undergraduate and postgraduate courses (subjects) across a range of disciplines and at multiple campus locations.

Depending on whether you are studying at another university and want to include one of our courses in your degree, or just want to take a single subject to increase your knowledge and skills in a particular area, there are two options for completing single courses.

Non-award study

Non-award study involves studying a single University of Newcastle course (subject). A non-award subject is not part of a degree with us. However, if you decide to study a degree with us in the future, you may be able to receive credit for non-award courses that you have completed.

As a non-award student, you will need to pay the costs for the subject that you are completing up front at the start of term. Please take the time to read through this important financial information before completing your application.

Please note that not all courses (subjects) are available for non-award study. Please make sure you consider any enrolment requirements prior to submitting an application. You can find assumed knowledge, enrolment requirements and program restriction information on the Course Handbook.

Cross-institutional study

Cross-institutional study allows students of other universities to complete a course (subject) with the University of Newcastle, and have that course contribute to their degree at their “home” university. It’s a great way to add some variety to your degree, by taking one of our subjects that interests you.

It’s important that you first gain approval from your home university to ensure that the course will count towards your degree. This approval also ensures that you will be charged the correct fee type by the University of Newcastle. If you are a Commonwealth Supported Student at your university, you can access Commonwealth Support for the subject you complete with us. If you are a fee paying student at your home university, you will need to pay fees with us.

To make sure that we have the correct fee information, you will need to include a Home Provider Endorsement form with this application.

Application closing dates

Applications for Cross Institutional and Non-Award study are now open for 2026. 

To ensure that your application is assessed and processed in time for you to start studying at the commencement of term, applications cannot be accepted after these dates.

Please make sure that you submit your application, with all required documents by the closing date.
