Receiving credit
We can recognise prior study you have completed to reduce the number of courses you need to study, saving you time and money.
Credit can be awarded to students who have already achieved the learning outcomes of our subjects through TAFE, previous University studies, or even work experience.
How to apply
Check your eligibility
If you are hoping to gain credit for previous studies TAFE or equivalent, check our Credit Transfer Catalogue to see what you might be eligible for.
Find your subjects
Visit our degrees to find the degree program you want to study. Scroll down the page to our program plans and select the program plan most relevant to what you want to study i.e the major.
When you have accessed your program plan, view each of the subjects in that plan that look similar to what you have already studied. If the subject details seem like items you have studied then make a note of each of the course codes for that subject (i.e INFO1010) and then a note of the similar subject you have already studied.
You will need this information when you fill out your application to map the courses you want credit for.
Prepare your documents
Make sure you have scanned colour copies of the documentation you will need to supply during your application. You will need:
Submit your application
Complete the online application form making sure you submit it with all your documentation attached at least 2 weeks before the start of term. The earlier you apply, the earlier you get an outcome.
Visit our key dates to find out when terms begin.
Check your eligibility
If you are hoping to gain credit for previous studies at your current institution, check our Credit Transfer Catalogue to see what you might be eligible for.
Lodge your application
Lodge your application for admission and indicate that you wish to apply for credit/RPL and your intended major or specialisation for the program you are seeking admission and credit.
Upload your documents
Using our online application portal, upload certified copies (or clear colour copies) of your official transcripts, completion certificates and detailed course/subject syllabuses.
The syllabuses should contain the total hours for the course, assessments and their weighting, weekly topic schedule and textbook materials used.
Important to know
If you are applying for a Health and Medicine program, you will need to map the courses/subjects you have undertaken that are similar to the University of Newcastle courses. For all other degree programs credit mapping is not required.
Want to know what credit you might get without actually having to apply?
To get an official outcome on what credit you may be eligible for you will need to lodge a credit application, however if you have completed some study with TAFE or a different private provider (overseas or in Australia) you can search our Credit Transfer Catalogue.
This will help you find out if we have any existing arrangements or established credit pathways for what you have already studied and will give you an insight into what you could get when you apply.
