Description

The Master of Professional Engineering (Civil) is designed to facilitate a broader and deeper approach to civil engineering which leads to a formal qualification at the Masters level. The program duration is three years full time or part time equivalent. The program offers students the opportunity to broaden their technical competence either in another discipline (such as disaster management, business, sustainability, construction management, safety and risk), or to deepen their competence in the civil engineering discipline. It may also be used to strengthen a student's technical capacity based on any gaps in their prior knowledge and to expose students to Australian design, construction and management practices.

The program focuses on:

  • Fundamental background knowledge to successfully study civil engineering at an advanced level.
  • Advanced engineering skills and knowledge required by a practising civil engineer.
  • Capstone courses in civil engineering while also completing an advanced level research program.

Program learning outcomes

On successful completion of the program students will have:

  • Comprehensive, theory-based understanding of engineering fundamentals and/or the underpinning natural and physical sciences as applicable to the engineering discipline
  • Conceptual understanding of the mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics and computer and information sciences which underpin the engineering discipline
  • In-depth understanding of specialist bodies of knowledge within the engineering discipline
  • Discernment of knowledge development and research directions within the engineering discipline
  • Knowledge of contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline
  • Understanding of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in the specific discipline
  • Application of established engineering methods to complex engineering problem solving
  • Fluent application of engineering techniques, tools and resources
  • Application of systematic engineering synthesis and design processes
  • Application of systematic approaches to the conduct and management of engineering projects
  • Ethical conduct and professional accountability

Admission information

Admission requirements

3-year (240 unit) Program

  • Non-engineering Bachelor Degree with at least 20 units of study in Mathematics (especially calculus and linear algebra); and Science, as related to Civil Engineering with an equivalent GPA of 4.5 or above.
  • You may also be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) on a case-by-case basis.

English Language Requirements

All Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the University’s English proficiency requirement. Further information regarding English language proficiency requirements can be found at the English Language Proficiency for Admission Policy here.

  • IELTS Overall Minimum: 6.5
  • IELTS Sub Test Minimum: 6

Compulsory program requirements

2024 Commencing Students

Students who commenced from 2024 are required to complete 12 weeks of Industrial Experience as part of the program requirements.

Pre-2024 Commencing Students

Students who were admitted prior to 2024 in Pathway A and Pathway B are required to complete 12 weeks of Industrial Experience as part of the program requirement.

It is anticipated that some commencing students may have met the Industrial Experience requirement, as such they will be deemed to have met this requirement, provided they can submit suitable evidence, such as a statement from the employer.

As students in Pathway C will already hold a Washington Accord qualification they are exempted from this requirement.

International students studying this program on campus are required to enrol full time to comply with their student visa requirements and complete their study in the standard minimum program duration. Program requirements

3-year full time (240 units) 

The MPE (Civil) is comprised of 240 units, of which, 190 units are core courses, 20 units are design courses, 20 units of courses chosen from the Course List and 10 units are elective courses. 

Students are not recommended to commence in Semester 1 unless they receive credit, due to course availability.

Transition arrangements

The MPE (Civil) [40183] program has been revised for 2020. Students who commenced prior to 2020 are advised to contact their Program Convenor or Academic Program Advisor (ProgramAdvice@newcastle.edu) to ensure they are on track with their enrolment.

Electives 10 unit requirement

Complete 10 units of electives to fulfil the requirements of the program. Electives can be used to extend and complement your core studies with more courses in the same field of study, or from areas that might be of interest to you. Electives can be chosen from all postgraduate courses available at the University that do not have any other conditions (such as a course requisite) applied to them.

Through the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, students can access a free suite of NUPrep preparation courses as well as Academic Learning Support.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka Institute.
