Callaghan Campus Life

Callaghan Campus Life

Nestled on Australia's spectacular east coast and surrounded by some of the state's most popular destinations, Newcastle is an all-round great choice as a safe and friendly place to live. Our Callaghan Campus is around 20 minutes away from the Newcastle CBD and is the perfect place for a study/life balance. With a variety of facilities on campus including a bar and live music venue, restaurant, cafes, pharmacy and fitness centre, you have everything you need right on your doorstep.

Whether it’s Newcastle’s famously good coffee to kick-start your day, a game of pool with friends, a cold drink after a long day of lectures or a tasty meal, we’ve got you covered with a wide range of cafes, food outlets and bars on campus.

And you don’t have to venture too far to catch some of the world’s biggest musicians and bands. Chances are you’ll find a gig at Callaghan’s Bar on the Hill or at one of the many iconic venues in Newcastle.

Located just 20 minutes from Newcastle’s CBD, Callaghan is the perfect place for study/life balance.

With a variety of different facilities at our Callaghan campus including a post office, medical centre and pharmacy, cafes and restaurants, as well our on-campus gym The Forum and other sporting facilities, you have everything you need right on your doorstep.

Getting around campus and Newcastle is made simple for residents with different public transport options available including bus and train routes which run directly through the campus.

The University Provides a free shuttle between Callaghan and Newcastle City provides students easy access to our Newcastle City Campuses.

Newcastle is known as the 'place to be' for the creative arts. We have the highest ratio of artists per head of population in the country. Venues range from world-class galleries, museums and theatres to shopfronts and the emerging small bar scene.

Take in the spectacular coastline by walking all or part of the 6km Bathers Way, which stretches from Nobby's Beach to Merewether. Why not stop for a swim at one of the beautiful beaches along the way?

Cycling is also very popular in Newcastle, with a comprehensive network of dedicated bike trails and on-road bike lanes that will take you along the harbour foreshore and further afield. Don't miss a ride along the Fernleigh Track which follows a disused coal haul rail line for 15km from Newcastle to Lake Macquarie.

There are so many other things to do in the area:

No matter which campus you study at, there are always events happening during the semester. From Orientation to the Festival of Autonomy and plenty of celebrations in between, there is no shortage of social activities.

Take part in study workshops, get involved in health and fitness programs, attend presentations from international scholars, or simply kick back and enjoy a great film at Movies by Moonlight.

Callaghan has an on-campus gym – The Forum – which also features a secondary location just 500 metres from our Newcastle City campus. Facilities across both sites include a 50-metre indoor pool, cardio and strength training zones, rock-climbing wall, cycle zone, group fitness classes and multi-purpose courts.

There are several sporting ovals close to the residential precinct which can be used for a wide range of activities, and shared paths make walking, jogging and cycling around campus easy.
