Food and bars

We have a wide range of cafes, restaurants and bars across our Callaghan, Newcastle City precinct and Central Coast campuses. So whether you're looking for a quiet spot for a coffee or drink, or a place to catch up with friends for a bite to eat, we've got plenty of options for you. We also have a café on hand in each of our libraries providing coffee, snacks and lunches.

Bar on the Hill

Location: UH-212, Bar on the Hill

Semester opening hours: 8.00am to 3.00pm, Monday - Friday. Bar service 11.00am to 5.00pm.

Located on the Hunter side of our Callaghan campus, the Bar on the Hill is the centre of entertainment at the University of Newcastle. With nightly events, including bingo, trivia and student parties, BOTH is the go-to place for students. Bar on the Hill is also one of Newcastle’s best live music venues, hosting some of Australia’s best artists, bands and international guests.

The cafe serves up a wide variety of delicious, healthy and well-priced breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. With coffee, cold drinks and a licensed bar, BOTH has all your drink options covered.


The Hive Cafe

Closes Friday 18  December 2020, reopens end of January 2021.

Providing people who want to eat healthy with a fast, easy and nutritious solution. The café serves a range of grab-and-go salads, wraps and sandwiches as well as a diverse range of chef-prepared meals which are restaurant quality, calorie controlled, low in sodium, free from preservatives and additives.

Drop in for great coffee and pick up a healthy snack.


Gloria Jeans Coffee

Location: US-201, Shortland Building

Semester opening hours: 8.00am to 6.00pm, Monday - Friday

Non-semester opening hours: 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday - Friday

Chill out and indulge at Gloria Jean's Coffees with your favourite drink of choice. Serving a quality selection of hot and cold drinks from the classic cappuccino to their signature cold-brew iced coffee.

There is also a tempting selection of sweet and savoury food options to choose from, including gluten free and vegan.


Local Connections

Location: US-209, Shortland Building

Semester opening hours: 8.00am to 5.00pm, Monday - Friday (private events available from 6pm)

Local Connections is the University’s latest casual all-day dining restaurant. Nestled in Callaghan's lush bushland setting, Local Connections aims to highlight the connection between the University and the local community.

In line with the University's Environmental Sustainability Plan 2019-2025, Local Connections is committed to being eco-friendly through recycling, remaining plastic-free and reducing food waste.


Mamaduke Cafe

Mamaduke is a cosy cafe that is the perfect place to meet up with friends for a coffee or bite to eat. The cafe seats 100 and offers a-la-carte style menu with seasonal specials for breakfast, lunch and special event bookings for functions and cocktail parties.


McLarty Dining

Noodle Bar Cafe

Sinofood Cafe Shortland

Location: US-304, Shortland Building

If you're after authentic Chinese food, Sinofood Café is the place to curb your cravings. They make mouth-watering dumplings fresh onsite and bubble tea with toppings of the day.


Sprout Cafe Shortland

Location: L-271, Auchmuty Library

Semester opening hours: 8.00am to 7.00pm, Monday - Thursday. 8.00am to 6.00pm, Friday

Semester weekends: 11.00am to 4.00pm

Non-semester opening hours: 8.00am to 4.00pm, Monday - Friday

Along with 10/10 coffee, Sprout serves a delicious array of fresh sandwiches, salads, wraps, muffins and heartier meals such as pastas and curries. There are meals for everyone with gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options available.


Subway

Closing Friday 18 December. Reopen date TBC.

Subway is a fast-food franchise that primarily offers healthy submarine sandwiches and salads. Subway is a popular choice for lunch on campus with both students and staff. They offer a huge range of fresh subs (including yummy breakfast subs!), wraps, salads, cold drinks and the famous Subway cookie!

Gluten-free and vegetarian options, as well as catering, are available.


The Juice Doctor Cafe

Location: SCH-306, The Forum

Semester opening hours: 7.00am to 7.00pm, Monday - Friday.

The Juice Dr provides all things fresh from delicious fruit salads, healthy wraps, fruit smoothies, freshly made fruit and vegetable juices and coffee. You can also stock up on your bulk bag of coffee beans.

Uni Bakehouse

The Uni Bakehouse is all about delicious food at affordable prices. They serve a great range of fresh bakery items including sausage rolls, pies, pastries, muffins and other sweet treats. Uni Bakehouse has worked its way into the hearts of students and staff at the Uni and aims to offer the best-tasting, value for money food with the friendliest and fastest service on campus.

NUspace Cafe

With a focus on healthy living, meals are prepared fresh daily by chefs, and are free from chemicals and added sugar, low in sodium and high in nutritional value. The menu is affordable with a wide range of freshly made and locally sourced meals including poke bowls, wraps, salads, and hot meals such as beef korma, slow-cooked lamb and poached salmon.The cafe also has a range of healthy snacks, including protein ball and bars - and, of course, great coffee.

Ganda Burung

Ganda Burung

In Darkinung language, Ganda Burung are the words for food shelter. This name was chosen for the recently refurbished eatery to reflect the type of experience our students, staff and visitors will experience. This is a place to sit and connect with others and a place to connect with the outdoor spaces including the billabong located adjacent to the café. Sit back and enjoy a range of hot and cold meals, sweet treats and great healthy food options as well.

Yara Ngura

Yara Ngura

In Darkinung language, Yara Ngura are the words for gumtree place. This name was chosen for the library café to reflect the previous name of the space and to connect with the environment around the campus.​​​​​​​ Pop in to get your coffee fix as well as a range of great grab and go meals.

Survival stations

Providing filtered hot and cold water as well as access to free microwaves, you can find student kitchens at:

  • Callaghan campus: Next to Shortland Student Central in the Shortland Building.
  • The Hunter Building has a Student Kitchen behind the courtyard – near HB15.
  • In the Auchmuty Information Common (AIC). We have a huge student kitchen and social study space adjacent to Boost Juice
  • Newcastle City Precinct: On level 1 of NeW Space, towards the back of the building.
  • Ourimbah campus: The top floor of the library, at the lecture theatres and at classrooms south.
  • Port Macquarie campus: In the canteen block
