Enterprise agreements
Our enterprise agreements set out our employment conditions at the University of Newcastle. They cover a range of conditions such as pay, leave and performance.
Academic staff (other than casuals) accumulate 20 working days of paid annual leave per year of service. Annual leave entitlements are provided on a pro-rata basis for part-time staff.
Staff should agree to a leave plan with their supervisor for when and for how long annual leave can be taken in each calendar year. A staff member's request to take annual leave will not unreasonably be refused. What's reasonable depends on the circumstances but may include: other staff being on leave; or if it's a peak work period within your team/discipline.
A leave plan may be in the form of a discussion and/or e-mail between staff member/supervisor. Once a leave plan has been agreed to, staff should book their leave in HRonline.
Staff may request to cash out an amount of paid annual leave on reasonable grounds. Other than in exceptional circumstances, the maximum amount of annual leave that may be cashed out during the life of the enterprise agreement is two (2) weeks. Staff must be paid at least the same amount they would have if they actually took the leave and they must have at least 4 weeks of leave left after the cash out.
