Hiru’s outlook has been shaped by living between Sri Lanka and Australia, experiences that gave him a deep appreciation for how politics, culture and community shape people’s lives. Witnessing both progress and inequality sparked his strong belief in equity, justice and respectful public discourse. Now studying Commerce and Laws (Hons), he hopes to explore policy and governance with nuance, contributing to legal and social systems that uphold fairness and human rights. Inspired by trailblazers like Eleanor Roosevelt and Michael Kirby, as well as the mentors in his own life, Hiru is driven to help create thoughtful, principled and inclusive change.

Equity and justice are at the heart of Kiani’s calling to midwifery. Growing up in Lake Macquarie and inspired by the strong women who shaped her life, she has developed a deep commitment to ensuring every woman receives respectful, culturally safe and empowering care. Her passion for closing the gap in maternal and child health outcomes—particularly for Indigenous women and families—drives her dream of becoming a compassionate and inclusive healthcare leader. Through the Ma & Morley Program, Kiani hopes to broaden her perspective, strengthen her ability to lead with empathy, and transform her commitment to health equity into meaningful action for future generations.

Growing up in Inverell, Joshua saw firsthand how geography, limited resources and community disadvantage can shape a young person’s opportunities. These experiences strengthened his belief that education is one of the most powerful tools for equity, and inspired his goal of returning to rural schools as a secondary teacher who advocates for students both in and beyond the classroom. A dedicated leader and proud rural student, Joshua has balanced school captaincy, community service and sport with a commitment to uplifting others. Inspired by teachers who led with empathy and humour, he hopes to create classrooms where every student feels seen, supported and able to thrive.

For Jack, caring for Country is both a cultural obligation and a lifelong passion. Raised on Worimi and Awabakal Country, he grew up walking the land, learning from his parents and cultural Uncles, and developing a deep understanding of the plants, animals and ecosystems that sustain us all. These experiences shaped his commitment to environmental sustainability and biodiversity conservation. Now studying Environmental Science and Management, Jack hopes to serve as a bridge between cultural knowledge holders and the scientific community, helping others understand why Country must be respected, healed and protected. He aims to create “ripples of thought” that inspire people to reconnect with the natural world and give back to it for generations to come.

Oscar’s passion for environmental sustainability grew during extensive travels after high school, where he witnessed firsthand the impact humans have on the planet. These experiences motivated him to pursue Environmental Science & Management and Business, with a focus on Sustainability and International Relations. Growing up in Newcastle, Oscar balanced school leadership with years in the Newcastle Jets academy, where he developed discipline, teamwork and resilience. Inspired by his father’s work in the community and his mother’s love of culture and language, he hopes to become a leader in sustainability—shaping effective pathways to address climate challenges and contributing to global efforts through policy and international collaboration.

Growing up in a small rural community, Hannah learned early that caring for Country is a relationship built on reciprocity. Her childhood surrounded by forest, farmland and community land care shaped a deep respect for the natural world and a belief that environmental wellbeing is inseparable from cultural and social wellbeing. Now studying Environmental Science and Management, she hopes to weave scientific knowledge with traditional practices to support regenerative land management and biodiversity restoration. Inspired by leaders like Vandana Shiva, Hannah aims to foster a culture of stewardship where people and ecosystems can thrive together, and to help communities rebuild stronger, more sustainable futures.

Siarne is a proud Gamilaraay woman whose commitment to environmental sustainability is shaped by her upbringing in Coonabarabran and her deep connection to Country. Moving five hours from home to pursue coastal and marine science strengthened her resilience and sharpened her determination to become a role model for other young Aboriginal students. A passionate aspiring marine biologist and accomplished discus thrower, Siarne hopes to protect Australia’s marine environments and promote practices that honour culture and sustain ecosystems for future generations. Inspired by her late cousin Kyle Turner’s strength and pride, she aims to uplift her community and lead with courage, compassion and cultural grounding.

Growing up in Cessnock, Melissa learned early how illness, disability and disadvantage can limit the opportunities many people take for granted. As a young carer for her mum, she witnessed the impact of inequitable systems firsthand, shaping her deep commitment to justice and her desire to create scientific solutions that improve people’s lives. A compassionate and proactive leader, she has volunteered across her school and community, driven by a belief that science should serve those facing the greatest hardships. Now studying Biotechnology, Melissa hopes to champion innovations that expand access, dignity and opportunity, and honour the resilience her mother has modelled throughout her life.

Imogen’s passion for environmental sustainability began in childhood and has only strengthened as she has learned more about the connection between healthy ecosystems and community wellbeing. Growing up in Newcastle and attending a performing arts school helped shape her confidence and taught her the impact of storytelling and collaboration, qualities she now brings to her studies in Criminology and Laws (Hons). Her experiences in the Cook Islands and local Landcare programs showed her how environmental protection and social justice rely on one another. Guided by her parents' compassion and determination, Imogen hopes to advocate for environmental laws and community-focused solutions that support a fair and sustainable future.

Witnessing this inequity reshaped her understanding of dignity and inspired her to pursue Psychology and Laws (Hons) to advocate for more compassionate, trauma informed support within Australia’s health systems. With a background in global touring entertainment, Alexandra brings a unique blend of cultural awareness, emotional intelligence and leadership to her studies. Motivated by her mother’s strength, she hopes to reform mental health policy and help build systems where every person is treated with humanity, fairness and respect.

Alongside her passion for computer science, these experiences have inspired her mission to design AI powered learning tools that make high quality education accessible to every student, regardless of gender, language or location. Recognised for her initiative in developing personalised learning technology during high school, Chloe hopes to expand this work at university and contribute to a future where students worldwide are empowered to learn, connect and thrive.
