Support for Underrepresented Groups

In 2024, the University of Newcastle continued to provide a wide range of mentoring, counselling, and peer support programs to assist students and staff from underrepresented groups, ensuring equitable access to wellbeing, academic, and professional development support.

All members of the University community — both students and staff — have free access to confidential counselling services, available in person or online, delivered by qualified professionals.

In addition to general support services, the University offers tailored programs for equity groups, including:

  • Indigenous Students: Supported through the Wollotuka Institute, which provides academic tutoring, cultural and peer mentoring, financial support, and counselling delivered by dedicated Indigenous staff.
  • Indigenous Staff: Supported by the Indigenous Staff Network, overseen by the Office of Indigenous Strategy and Leadership.
  • LGBTQIA+ Students and Staff: Supported by the Queer Collective and the ALLY Network, which foster inclusive spaces and advocacy.
  • Students with Disability: Supported through the AccessAbility program, which delivers personalised learning and access plans.
  • Students from Low Socioeconomic Backgrounds: Supported via targeted Enabling Pathways, offering alternative entry and ongoing academic support.
  • International Students: Supported by the International Support team, offering orientation, visa guidance, wellbeing services, and peer networking.

These programs reflect the University’s commitment to inclusive excellence and the wellbeing and success of all members of its community.
