Program handbook

Description

The Master of Professional Engineering (Mechanical) is designed to facilitate a broader and deeper approach to mechanical engineering which leads to a formal qualification at the Masters level. The program duration is between 1-3 years full time depending on the student’s prior qualification/s.

The program focuses on:

  • Fundamental background knowledge to successfully study mechanical engineering at an advanced level. 
  • Advanced engineering skills and knowledge required by a practicing mechanical engineer.
  • Capstone courses mechanical engineering while also completing an advanced level research program.

Graduates of this program will have the knowledge, and technical and professional attributes to provide innovative solutions to society’s needs now and into the future.


Program learning outcomes

On successful completion of the program students will have:

Admission information

Admission requirements

Direct admission into the 3 year MPE (Mechanical) Pathway A: 

  • Graduates from the University of Newcastle or another institution with a non-engineering Bachelor Degree with at least 20 units of study in Mathematics (especially calculus and linear algebra); and Science, as related to Mechanical Engineering AND a UON GPA of 4.5 or above. You may also be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) which will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Direct admission into the 2 year MPE (Mechanical) Pathway B with 80 units of Recognition (RPL): 

  • Graduates from the University of Newcastle or another institution with a Bachelor Degree (AQF 7) in Mechanical Engineering AND a UON GPA of 4.5 or above. 

Direct admission into the 1 year MPE (Mechanical) Pathway C with 160 units of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):

  • Graduates from an institution other than University of Newcastle with a Bachelor Honours Degree (AQF 8) in Mechanical Engineering with a UON GPA of 4.5 or above.

University of Newcastle Engineering Graduate Pathway C:

  • Graduates of the University of Newcastle Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) single and combined programs will automatically be approved for admission to the 80 unit or 1-year program (Pathway C) with 160 units of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Minimum English language proficiency requirements

Compulsory program requirements

Students in Pathway A and Pathway B are required to complete 12 weeks of Industrial Experience as part of the program requirement.

It is anticipated that some commencing students may have met the Industrial Experience requirement, as such they will be deemed to have met this requirement, provided they can submit suitable evidence, such as a statement from the employer.

As students in Pathway C will already hold a Washington Accord qualification they are exempted from this requirement.

Program requirements

Pathway A:

The MPE (Mechanical) Pathway A is comprised of 240 units, of which, 190 units are core courses, 40 units are directed courses and 10 units are elective courses. 

Pathway B:

The MPE (Mechanical) Pathway B is comprised of 160 units, of which, 120 units are core courses, 30 units are directed courses and 10 units are elective courses. 

Pathway C:

The MPE (Mechanical) Pathway C is comprised of 80 units, of which, 60 units are core courses, 10 units are directed courses and 10 units are elective courses. 

Pathway C - Alternate:

Students who completed a UON Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) (single or combined) will complete MECH6840 MPE Thesis (10 units) and 30 units of Directed course in lieu of MECH6840A MPE Thesis A: Experimental Methods and MECH6840B MPE Thesis B. This alternate pathway comprises of 80 units, of which 40 units are core courses, 30 units are directed courses, and 10 units are elective courses. Students wishing to undertake the 30 unit thesis project (MECH6840A and MECH6840B) should contact their Program Convenor prior to enrolment to seek approval and ensure that they are on track with their enrolment.

Through the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, students can access a free suite of NUPrep preparation courses as well as Academic Learning Support.
