NUmates

NUmates is a social program designed to help international students feel connected, supported, and at home at the University of Newcastle.

Starting a new life in a different country can be exciting—but it can also feel overwhelming. NUmates makes it easier by bringing students together through fun events, friendly conversation, and a welcoming community.

What NUmates offers
  • Regular social events – from pancake brunches and cooking classes to whale watching, movie nights, and cultural tours.
  • Peer connection – opportunities to chat, make friends, and share experiences in a relaxed environment.
  • Online community – a moderated Facebook group where students can connect between events.
  • Support when you need it – informal contact with staff and student leaders who can help point you to the right services.

Who can join?

NUmates is open to all international students currently enrolled at the University of Newcastle. Whether you’ve just arrived or have been here a while, you’re welcome to get involved.

Meet the NUmates Team
Karen Tryk

Karen Tryk

(She/Her)

Karen holds a Bachelor of Design/Bachelor of Secondary Teaching and a Graduate Certificate of Career Development, and has over 15 years of experience working in international education within the higher education sector. She is passionate about meeting and working with international students, supporting their academic journey and helping them make the most of their Australian study experience. Throughout her career, she has developed expertise in student engagement and program coordination, creating opportunities for students to connect, thrive, and achieve their goals. Outside of work, she's a proud mum of two children and two fur babies who loves travelling, motorcycle road trips, discovering new tastes and exotic foods, and relaxing with her favourite show, Escape to the Chateau.

Mia Asplin

Mia has been the NUmates Program Assistant since March 2025, and loved every second of it. She works closely with Karen to facilitate our social events, with a particular focus on marketing and administration. Having lived abroad herself, she's passionate about helping create a positive and welcoming experience for international students in Australia. She is also currently studying a Bachelor of Psychological Science, so working alongside other students, especially those from diverse backgrounds, is something she really enjoys. She loves meeting new people, hearing their stories, and learning about cultures different from her own.
