At Newcastle Business School, we are dedicated to advancing research that addresses today’s global challenges and shapes the future of business and society. By embedding our transversal themes from the School’s strategic plan such as entrepreneurship and innovation, digitalisation, applied data analytics, and sustainability into our research across our disciplines, we create real-world solutions that delivers meaningful social and economic outcomes.
NBS integrates the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs), the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) and the Responsible Research for Business and Management (RRBM) principles into its research priorities and is institutionally aligned with the University of Newcastle's 'Looking Ahead' strategic plan (2020-2025), including its four key institutional priorities: Better, Healthier Living; Connected Communities; Next Generation Resources; and Growing Industries. These priorities guide our efforts to collaborate with industry, government, and community stakeholders, ensuring that our research not only contributes to academic knowledge but also delivers tangible applied benefits to society.
Over the past five years, Newcastle Business School has achieved significant success in research quality and impact, consistently ranking in the 176-200 band globally for the subject area ‘Business and Economics’ in the Times Higher Education subject rankings, where our research quality is ranked number 1 in Australia. In 2023, the evidence of the quality and impact of our research includes over 87% of our core faculty publishing in top-tier journals ranked as A/A* by the Australian Business Deans Council, where 60% of our publications involve international collaborations from over 30 countries and over 90 students enrolled in our PhD program. Our faculty also continues to attract external funding, supporting industry engaged research and fostering innovation. The school’s research program informs curriculum development and student learning outcomes, directly aligning with the standards of leading accreditation bodies such as the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS).

This group explores the role of accounting in addressing environmental and societal challenges, emphasising the importance of transparency, corporate accountability, and sustainable business practices. We focus on how accounting can promote climate change mitigation, responsible governance and financial literacy.
Consumer Behaviour and Insights
This group explores the intersection of consumer psychology and behaviour, offering frameworks and insights for socially responsible strategies that engage consumers across digital and physical environments. Our research spans diverse sectors, including services, tourism, retail, and non-profits including health and non-government agencies, helping organisations understand and respond to changing consumer needs. The group is also home to the Marketing Technology Lab which is a dedicated space for research and engagement.
Health and Economic Wellbeing
Integrating economics, development, and health, this group works to create sustainable solutions for economic and healthcare challenges. Our research helps inform policies that improve societal wellbeing and ensure equitable access to healthcare resources.
International Collaboration and Development
Focusing on cross-border knowledge sharing, supply chain collaboration, and the development of political economies, this group examines how international partnerships foster innovation and economic growth. Our research provides insights into building resilient, connected communities in a globalised world.
Sustainable Finance
Investigating sustainable finance and governance, this group aims to enhance the efficiency, inclusivity, and impact of financial systems in addressing global challenges. We explore the role of financial innovations and regulations in supporting sustainable development and mitigating environmental risks. The group is also home to Greater Bank Finance Lab which is a dedicated space for research and engagement.

This group investigates how organisations can integrate digital technologies and sustainable practices to drive responsible growth. By balancing profitability with social and environmental responsibility, we help organisations meet stakeholder expectations and navigate the digital economy.
Tourism, Hospitality and Events: Sustainable and Digital innovation
This research explores various sectors of the wider visitor economy to develop socially responsible strategies that contribute to resilient communities and competitive destinations. With specialised expertise in technological advances, our research informs tourism stakeholders how to address digital challenges and excel in an increasingly dynamic and turbulent world.
