Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health

After 20 years of providing rural mental health research, support and programs for rural and remote communities, the Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health (CRRMH) closed in July 2022.

CRRMH has a proud and long-standing history of providing evidence-based translational research and expert advice on mental health for people living in rural and remote Australia.

CRRMH conducted nationally recognised research aimed at improving mental health services, rural suicide prevention, and helping individuals, their families and communities to stay mentally well.

Throughout its 20 years of operation, CRRMH reached thousands of Australians, helping to reduce inequalities in health outcomes in rural and remote regions and the results of CRRMH research continues to inform understanding of rural mental health.

The University of Newcastle is proud of the CRRMH’s legacy and will continue its commitment to improving mental health through initiatives like the HMRI Healthy Minds program, which includes a range of research programs targeted at improving mental health outcomes for Australians.

The resources developed by the CRRMH will continue to be available for researchers and members of the public to access free of charge at www.crrmh.com.au

The programs developed by the CRRMH have reached thousands of Australians and have helped to reduce inequalities in health outcomes in rural and remote regions.

Key collaborative research included the Australian Rural Mental Health Study (ARMHS) study, concepts of rural adversity, a comprehensive analysis of rural suicide and The Orange Declaration on rural and remote mental health.  These continue to inform understanding of rural mental health and the importance of ongoing research.
