Global Sport and Movement Collaborative

The Global Sport and Movement Collaborative (GSMC) is a bold new initiative from the University of Newcastle. We bring together world-class researchers, educators, and industry leaders to transform the future of sport, movement, and wellbeing.

Whether you're a prospective student, researcher, or industry partner, we offer a dynamic platform for collaboration, discovery, and change.

Our priorities

We bring a multi-disciplinary approach to exercise science, health and physical education, nutrition, sports management, business, entrepreneurship, technology and data science. We are tackling real-world challenges with innovative, inclusive, and impactful solutions.

We have five research, education, and industry-aligned priorities:

  • Harnessing Technology
We’re partnering with government and sportstech leaders to develop cutting-edge solutions using artificial intelligence, wearables, virtual reality, and video analytics.
  • Promoting Access and Participation
We are dedicated to increasing equity and inclusion in sport and physical activity. Our research and education initiatives focus on reducing barriers and fostering lifelong participation, particularly among priority populations such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, Pasifika communities, culturally and linguistically diverse groups, and people living in rural and remote areas.
  • Enhancing Health and Wellbeing
We explore how movement strengthens communities, supports mental wellbeing, and contributes to healthier societies through evidence-based programs and partnerships.
  • Optimising Sports Performance
Elite and emerging athletes benefit from our expertise in training, recovery, and performance analytics. We’re advancing knowledge in biomechanics, nutrition, psychology, and data science to help athletes reach their full potential.
  • Supporting Learning Through Movement
We investigate the links between physical activity, cognition, and educational outcomes. Our research into physical literacy and motor skill acquisition is shaping how movement supports learning across all stages of life.
