The Water Resources Engineering Research Group are developing innovative computer models to provide methods of assessment of environmental impacts and management of disturbed ecosystems.
Water infrastructure systems provide modern society core services such as reliable water supply, drainage, wastewater collection and treatment, power and irrigation. However, existing systems are facing unprecedented stresses arising from population growth, ageing assets, climate change and changing societal expectations with regard to environmental impacts and levels of service. The research goal is to devise the best ways of planning and operating water infrastructure systems.
This requires developing and calibrating well-posed simulation models of infrastructure system dynamics and optimising investments and operating strategies to maximise returns to society and environment. Core specialisations include robust multi-criterion optimisation, statistical methods for model calibration, complex system simulation, flood and drought risk assessment, hydraulic modelling, river transport processes, and stochastic models of climate variability.
