Career Summary
Biography
Alexandra Little is a Lecturer in Speech Pathology at the University of Newcastle Department of Rural Health, working from both the Tamworth and Armidale office locations. As a graduate of the University of Newcastle, Alex has worked as a speech pathologist in a variety of hospital and outpatient clinical settings across rural NSW and Victoria since 2001. Drawing on the breadth of her experience as clinician and leader in the public health sector, Alex delivers practical learning opportunities for undergraduate speech pathology students on clinical placement across the New England, North West, Upper Hunter and Lower Mid North Coast regions of NSW. With skills in generating creative and innovative learning opportunities for students and their supervisors, Alex has developed unique clinical placement models suited to the rural practice context. Experienced in designing and delivering discipline-specific and interprofessional simulation activities, Alex incorporates simulation-based learning into student teaching in order to deliver hands-on clinical experiences.
Alex has a strong interest in interprofessional learning and coordinates the Tamworth Interprofessional Learning Modules program that brings students from all health professions together for interactive interprofessional learning experiences. She has also been involved in establishing the Work Integrated Learning Interprofessional Education (WILIPE) program. WILIPE has now expanded from its initial focus on learning activities for students from speech pathology and nutrition and dietetics to incorporate students from a variety of allied health professions. Collaborating with allied health academic colleagues, Alex has also delivered interprofessional workshops and online learning material around child development issues to early childhood educators and health professionals new to working in paediatrics.
Teaching Expertise
Alex has experience in designing and delivering clinical education training, interprofessional learning activities, and lecturing in speech pathology practice in rural settings.
Research Expertise
As part of her UONDRH role, Alex is involved with a number of collaborative research initiatives in relation to interprofessional learning, and longitudinal workforce outcomes for students undertaking rural clinical placements.

[more] Speech Pathology programs usually send students to workplaces to learn clinical skills necessary for practice. During COVID-19, programs needed to respond quickly to ensure that students continued to gain the necessary experiences and skills required to progress through their program and graduate as clinicians, while simultaneously complying with COVID-19 requirements. Case studies from seven different universities in Australia, Ghana and Hong Kong described the diverse ways in which placements were adapted to be COVID-safe, taking into account local needs. Some practices which had been included in placement education prior to the pandemic, such as telepractice and simulation-based learning, were extended and developed during this time. Educators, students, clinicians and clients responded to the rapidly changing needs of the time with flexibility and innovation, utilising a variety of technologies and tools to support case-based and virtual learning opportunities. Feedback from these diverse stakeholders about the experiences was positive, despite inevitable limitations and less-than-ideal circumstances. The positive findings provided insights for consideration in the future: could strategies implemented in response to the pandemic continue to be incorporated into placement experiences, enhancing current practices and maintaining student performance outcomes? Exceptional circumstances prompted exceptional responses; flexibility and innovation were accelerated in response to the pandemic and may transform future placement-based learning opportunities.

[more] Aim: The aim was to support rich collaborative practice between two professions who frequently work together across both ordered and organic modes of collaboration. Methods: This study uses a qualitative research approach of collaborative dialogical inquiry to explore the question 'From the perspective of dietitians and speech pathologists, "what works well" for developing and maintaining collaborative practice?' We deliberately chose a context where collaborative practice is evident, University Department of Rural Health (UONDRH). Participants in the research were academics and clinicians from dietetics and speech pathology. Data were sourced from our research reflections and focus group transcriptions. Analysis was dialogical and iterative. Results: Beyond shared purpose, knowledge of roles and good communication, the notions of curiosity, willingness and momentum were at the core of 'what works well' for collaborative practice between dietitians and speech pathologists. Participant perspectives related to collaborative practice between these professions and beyond to other professions, and involved collaborative practice within and across healthcare organisations and a university setting. Conclusions: Our interpreted themes of curiosity, willingness and momentum for developing and maintaining collaborative practice highlight the importance of paying attention to the less visible and difficult to measure aspects of patient-centred care. Questions for reflection are suggested to inform the ongoing process of developing and maintaining our and others' collaborative practice.

Rapport between supervisors from different professions: tapping into unrealised potential for developing students’ collaborative practice through work integrated learning$10,000
The importance of supervisors’ role-modelling their interprofessional rapport for the development of students’ collaborative practice in healthcare is often overlooked in work integrated learning (WIL). Through online, innovative workshops with a focus on interdisciplinary reflexivity, this project aims to tap into the unrealised potential of explicitly role-modelling rapport to support quality supervision of WIL.
Themes: Quality supervision and preparing stakeholders for WIL, Equitable and inclusive WIL experiences, Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary learning in WIL
