Car

Set in the heart of Newcastle's bustling central business district, our City campus is perfectly positioned to take advantage of public transport, and sustainable travel options. Our transport team are working on implementing actions from our Strategic Transport Management Plan to support active travel and public transport when travelling to our city campus. The university is committed to supporting sustainable transport under our Environmental Sustainability Plan.

Late in 2017, we commenced an express  shuttle bus service between our Callaghan and Newcastle City campuses. The service operates every 30 minutes Monday to Friday, is free to all staff and students, and offers complimentary WiFi so that people can choose to work on the go. In 2018, a daily average of 1000 staff and students used this service, decreasing the need for car travel and reducing carbon emissions and traffic congestion in Newcastle. We have now enhanced the service with additional pick up and drop off points at Callaghan and at Marketown, improving convenience and reducing the need for car travel around or between our campuses. Staff and students can simply use their university ID card when boarding the shuttle.

Parking

There is no general university parking on site at our Newcastle City campus however, there is paid parking on the surrounding streets. The public Wright Lane carpark between our Q and Nuspace buildings offers paid parking using the EasyPark app.

Civic West carpark is short walk from the City Campus, and offers paid daily parking. If you are a staff member or student, you can access discounted parking ($2.50 per hour or $10.00 per day) through a license agreement with Hunter Parking and Storage. You will need your student/staff ID to swipe at entry into the carpark for the discount to apply.

To gain access  to Civic West parking station, staff and students need access added to their university ID card prior to going into the parking station or discounted rates won't be applied. Wait for the access approval email from Infrastructure and Facilities Services before heading in.

Rideshare

Ridesharing, or carpooling, is the sharing of cars between drivers and passengers to reduce the number of cars on the road and an excellent option for travelling to campus.

The University of Newcastle has partnered with Liftango*, an exclusive ridesharing app, to make your trip to and from City Campus as hassle-free as possible. Users benefit from free parking in 20 exclusive spaces located behind The Conservatorium at Newcastle City Campus. Plus, Liftango has partnered with Pachama to offset the emissions of every trip made by drivers and passengers using their carpool technology.

When arranging a trip, your notification that you have a bay allocated to you is your permission to park in that area. As this is a high demand area, please ensure you cancel any matched trips that will not proceed so others can be allocated a bay.

* The Liftango app is available for University of Newcastle staff and students only.

Loading Zones

To assist with quick loading and accessibility to central commercial and operational areas, we have a very small amount of high demand loading zones to service the City Campus buildings. Loading zones are restricted to a time-frame of 30 minutes to allow the bay to be free for other users or emergency vehicles when required.

Loading Zones retain their status all hours, 7 days a week. Drivers who park their cars in a loading zones for longer periods than 30 minutes may risk a fine, even if it may be for university business.

Electric Vehicle Charging

The University has invested in sustainable transport by installing electric vehicle charging stations across Callaghan campus and we are committed to expanding our charge station capacity at our other campus locations where we are able to do so. For Newcastle City charging locations, check out  Plugshare.

Our charging infrastructure strategy is aimed at helping our community meet the challenges of transitioning to electric vehicles. As an electric vehicle-friendly University, our community can be confident the infrastructure is in place to support electric vehicles’ growing popularity and availability.

Aligned to our sustainability commitment, the electricity used to charge vehicles on campus is provided by 100% renewable sources thanks to our sector leading electricity supply agreement with Red Energy.
