Use free campus shuttles, public transport and walking routes to get around Callaghan and travel between campuses.

Find the right shuttle;

  • Travelling between Callaghan and Newcastle City campuses? Use the NUspace Shuttle.
  • Arriving at Warabrook Station early in the morning? Use the Station Shuttle.
  • Getting around Callaghan during the day? Use the Security or the Station Shuttle.
  • Travelling on or near campus at night? Call the Security Night Shuttle.

Getting around Callaghan

Callaghan is a large campus spanning more than 140 hectares, with extensive walking paths through bushland and across key teaching, study and social spaces. Many destinations on campus are within a short walk, making walking and other active travel options a convenient way to get around.

If you need to drive, there are 19 car parks across campus with more than 2,500 General parking bays. Student parking permits are valid in General parking bays only.

To help reduce congestion and make parking easier, free parking is available outside the Ring Road in Car Parks 14 and 16. From these locations, you can walk or catch a free campus shuttle to your destination. View the 2025 Callaghan Parking & Transport Map to find these car parks and plan your journey.

  • Car Park 14: 404 parking bays, located at the eastern end of campus near student accommodation. Most campus destinations are approximately a 10 to 15-minute walk away.
  • Car Park 16: 95 parking bays, located near Warabrook Station. Most campus destinations are approximately a 10 to 15-minute walk away.

Tip: Parking in an outer car park and walking or taking a shuttle can make it easier to find a space, especially in peak periods at the start of semester.

NUspace Shuttle

Travel between Callaghan and Newcastle City

The free NUspace Shuttle connects Callaghan campus with the Newcastle City campus from Monday to Friday.

The shuttle services NUspace and surrounding city buildings. It also stops at Marketown and Donald St, Hamilton before returning to Callaghan.

Service hours and frequency

  • Operating days: Monday to Friday
  • Operating hours: 7.10am to 10.15pm
  • During semester: Approximately every 30 minutes
  • During semester breaks and exam periods: Approximately every hour
  • Weekends and end of year closedown period: No service

The NUspace Shuttle is available to University of Newcastle students and staff only.

Before you board

Tap your student or staff ID card on the reader when you board. Free Wi-Fi is available while you travel.

Important information before you travel

  • Shuttle arrival times are estimates and may change because of traffic conditions.
  • Arrive at your stop at least 10 minutes before departure.
  • Departures from the Design bus stop and NUspace follow scheduled departure times. The shuttle may wait briefly at these stops before leaving.
  • The NUspace Shuttle operates Monday to Friday only.
  • Check the operations schedule or the myUni app for semester and semester-break timetables.

Station Shuttle

Travel from Warabrook Station to campus

The Station Shuttle connects Warabrook Station at Car Park 16 with car park 13 and Ring Road.

  • Operating days: Monday to Friday during semester and exam periods
  • Operating hours: 7am to 10am
  • Service type: Continuous loop

Warabrook Station is approximately a 10 to 15-minute walk from many campus destinations.

Note: you do not need to travel by train to use this shuttle – you are welcome to hop on and off at any of the stops on the Station Shuttle loop to get around campus easier.

Security Shuttle

Travel around Callaghan during the day

The Security Shuttle operates in a continuous loop around Callaghan campus, including Car Parks 14 and the Warabrook train station at car park 16.

  • Operating days: During semester
  • Operating hours: 8am to 4pm
  • Service type: Continuous campus loop

Security Night Shuttle

Request a pick-up after 6.30pm

The Security Night Shuttle provides transport to locations on campus and selected nearby suburbs within three kilometres of Callaghan.

The service covers parts of:

  • Jesmond
  • Shortland
  • Birmingham Gardens
  • Waratah West
  • Operating hours: 6.30pm to 1am
