Bike

The University of Newcastle strongly encourages you to consider leaving your car at home and instead take advantage of the variety of ways to get to our campuses where you can, using the wide range of active travel options. Active travel, such as cycling, has great health, financial and environmental benefits.

Active travel options are some of the most efficient and effective ways to incorporate regular exercise into our daily lives. By being active you can reduce many long-term health risks, enhance your mental and physical health and your well-being. You will also help our community by easing congestion on the transport network and reduce the environmental impacts associated.

Exploring other methods of travel over peak parking periods is a good way to avoid any stress at semester start.  Look out for our active travel events here or on our socials.

Bike hubs and racks

For staff and students, secure Bike Hubs with end-of-trip facilities, including showers and lockers, are available at Callaghan Campus. Use your University staff or student ID card to gain access.

Bike Hub East is located at the front of the Student Services Centre, whilst Bike Hub West is at the front of the Social Sciences Building. Click on the  Callaghan Campus map to view the location of the bike hubs, or to find one of the dozens of bike racks located around campus. Bike racks are available for staff, students and visitors to use.

Bike paths

Cycling is a great way to get to and around Callaghan Campus. Numerous on and off road bike paths connect the campus to Newcastle and surrounds.

Newcastle Cycleways Movement is Newcastles' active cycling community, meeting regularly to promote local cycling networks and benefits. NCM have put together a great set of videos of what you can expect along main cycleways leading to Callaghan Campus to help build confidence - keep an eye out for bike buses where you can join a group to ride together.

Your Council website has some great assets to support your cycling trip to campus and around your local areas. Check out your local Council links below:

Safe Cycling on Campus

Cyclists play an important role in supporting a safe, sustainable and active campus environment. To help keep our community safe, all cyclists are expected to follow NSW road rules and ride responsibly when travelling to, from and around the University of Newcastle. Riders should keep left, use marked bike lanes where available, and always give way to pedestrians on shared paths and footpaths. When moving through high‑traffic areas on campus, cyclists must slow down, ride predictably, and dismount when entering or leaving any University Bike Hub facility in line with the End of Trip (EoT) Terms and Conditions.

While using the Bike Hubs, cyclists must park only in the provided racks, ensure their bicycle does not obstruct others, and use their own secure lock. E‑bikes must not be charged inside Bike Hub facilities, and personal belongings should not be left unattended or stored outside of allocated areas. Riders are reminded not to allow others to tailgate into secure facilities and to report any safety or security concerns to University Security. By following NSW cycling requirements and the University’s Bike Hub Terms and Conditions, cyclists contribute to a safe, respectful and accessible campus for everyone.

Motorbikes and e-bikes

Motorbike parking on Callaghan Campus is free, and no permit is required as long as the motorcycle is parked in a designated motorcycle parking bay. Motorcycles located in bays other than the designated areas may be subject to a fine. University permits and tickets are not valid in a carparking bay on motorcycles. View the Parking and Transport map for motorcycle parking locations.

There are no e-bike charging facilities in Bike Hub East or West at Callaghan. Please charge e-bikes safely at home before riding them to campus to secure on one of our bike hub facilities.
