Bike

The University of Newcastle strongly encourages you to consider leaving your car at home and instead take advantage of the variety of ways to get to our campuses where you can, using the wide range of active travel options. Active travel, such as cycling, has great health, financial and environmental benefits.

Active travel options are some of the most efficient and effective ways to incorporate regular exercise into our daily lives. By being active you can reduce many long-term health risks, enhance your mental and physical health and your well-being. You will also help our community by easing congestion on the transport network and reduce the environmental impacts associated.

Cycling

Cycling is a great way to get to and around Callaghan Campus. Numerous on and off road bike paths connect the campus to Newcastle and surrounds.

Bike hubs and racks

For staff and students, secure Bike Hubs with end-of-trip facilities, including showers and lockers, are available at Callaghan Campus. Use your University staff or student ID card to gain access.

Bike Hub East is located at the front of the Student Services Centre, whilst Bike Hub West is at the front of the Social Sciences Building. Click on the  Callaghan Campus map to view the location of the bike hubs, or to find one of the dozens of bike racks located around campus. Bike racks are available for staff, students and visitors to use.

Motorbikes and e-bikes

Motorbike parking on Callaghan Campus is free, and no permit is required as long as the motorcycle is parked in a designated motorcycle parking bay.

Motorcycles located in bays other than the designated areas may be subject to a fine. University permits and tickets are not valid in a carparking bay on motorcycles. View the Parking and Transport map for motorcycle parking locations.

EV charging options

The University has invested in sustainable transport by installing electric vehicle and motorbike charging stations across Callaghan Campus.

Our charging infrastructure strategy is aimed at helping our community meet the challenges of transitioning to electric vehicles, including motorbikes. As an electric vehicle-friendly campus our community can be confident the infrastructure is in place to support the vehicles’ growing popularity.

The electric vehicle charging stations we have installed are currently free to use and free to park in for a period of up to four hours. Once your motorbike is charged, please move it to a motorbike zone (free to park) so others can access the charge-stations.

The charging stations are located in Carpark 4 and 6.

Aligned to our sustainability commitment, the electricity used to charge vehicles on campus is provided by 100% renewable sources thanks to our sector leading electricity supply agreement with Red Energy.
