Supporting Online Assessment Security Using Zoom
The following pages cover how to configure your Zoom settings and provides practical tips for running Zoom alongside an assessment to add a layer of oversight during online assessments.
Before you start – please ensure you have signed into your Zoom staff account. Follow the steps on installing and configuring Zoom.
Work through the following items to get started:
Considerations
Setting up Zoom correctly supports consistent and well-managed online quizzes. Sessions can run across multiple meetings for large cohorts or within breakout rooms for smaller groups, with clear staff and student allocation. Consistent settings and features like all screens mode, focus mode, and screen sharing help maintain supervision and reduce distractions.
Recommended Zoom Settings
Configuring Zoom settings before your session supports a secure and controlled environment. Tools like waiting rooms, passcodes, authenticated users, and muting on entry help manage participants, while limiting extra features maintains focus. Clear scheduling, shared access via Canvas, and pre-session testing help ensure a smooth experience.
Running and Monitoring the Session
Admitting, monitoring, and closing the session helps maintain a controlled and well-documented environment. Tools like gallery view, direct messaging, and spotlighting support active supervision, while backup communication manages connection issues. Recording key events and ending the meeting for all ensures a smooth and accurate conclusion.
Practical Tips and Checklist
Practical setup helps ensure attendance, minimise issues, and maintain control. Sharing the quiz password within Zoom confirms student presence, while preparation, testing, and managing notifications reduce disruptions. Using tools like the Participants panel and reusing saved settings helps maintain consistency across sessions.
