Learning Design

Our learning design services address the three overlapping needs of the University community. First, we partner and collaborate with academics across various units, and service providers to provide practical support and advice. Second, we enable and facilitate academics to expand their teaching expertise. Third, we build and create solutions in Canvas and other tools to address the learning needs of your students.

Our Learning Design team supports educators to transform learning and teaching, working with you on strategies to increase engagement in your courses, including the design of pre-class, in-class, and post-class activities for active learning, and ensuring that your assessments are constructively aligned to the outcomes for your course.

Constructive Alignment

Our Learning Design team supports educators to transform learning and teaching, working with you on strategies to increase engagement in your courses, including the design of pre-class, in-class, and post-class activities for active learning, and ensuring that your assessments are constructively aligned to the outcomes for your course.

How Learning Designers work

We guide staff through the messy realities of course change and adaptation.  Our goal is to leave you more equipped and confident to execute course or program improvement strategies in the future.

We achieve this by working collaboratively and respectfully with course co-ordinators and other T&L stakeholders including students. Through this process you will be exposed to a range of methods, tools, and practices chosen to best fit the unique arrangements of your teaching philosophy and course context.

For example, we will draw upon some of the following:

  • Guidelines: around active learning, assessment, rubrics, session plans, blueprints
  • Templates: shared in Canvas commons, or by word, spreadsheets, and PDFs
  • Processes: for designing and reviewing courses and programs
  • Training: on a range of learning and assessment topics

The process

A learning design process might look something like this:

Analyse > Design > Implement > Evaluate

Learning designers will facilitate relationship building with other Teaching and Learning support services.

For example, when implementing your design response, you may have 2 – 5 other staff supporting you (e.g. Learning Designer, Media Production Staff, Learning Technology Staff).  We call this a wraparound support model because we allocate support resources according to your individual needs.
