Assignment and Assessment in Canvas

Assignment and Assessment in Canvas

The following outlines what you will find in the Assignment menu item in your Canvas course and what is in the Assessment module in Canvas. For help setting up an assignment, we have a guide for assignment set up or get in touch with the Learning Technology Support team.

Assignment menu link

In your Canvas course you will see an Assignment menu item. Screenshot of the assignment link in the course menu

In this menu link you will see  the assessments you have created in the course and their associated group. You can edit assignment settings in this view, and publish and unpublish assignments to make available to students.

Keep in mind that in a student view, the default is to order by date instead of type. As they do not automatically get the same view as you, ensure you have clear headings on assessments including name, assessment number and topic. Students appreciate being able to get into the assignment menu item to quickly submit assignments so we recommend not hiding the Assignment menu option from students.

Assessment Module

In your course you will have an Assessments module. This module allows further details to be provided on an assignment. The Assignment and Quiz menu items do not allow you to add pages. Therefore if you have additional instructions or context for students you will need to add pages to the Assessment Module. Examples include: exemplar assignment submissions for student review, further review information associated with an assignment, quiz instructions you want students to have access to prior to a quiz, supporting materials and assessment help guides for students.

You do not need to duplicate your assignments to add them to the module. You can add to the Assessment module and they will appear in the 'Assignment' menu link or you can add to the Assignment menu link and also link them through the Assessment module.

  • I have created a quiz or assignment in the Quiz or Assignment menu links - Follow the instructions to Add an Existing Item as module items.
  • I want to  create a new assignment  from the Assessment Module - Follow the instructions to Add a New Item as a module item.

Please be aware that the status of the Module overrides the status of the individual items. The Module and the assessment must be published for students to access.
