University Foreign Interference Taskforce Guidelines

The Guidelines to Counter Foreign Interference in the Australian University Sector were developed by the University Foreign Interference Taskforce, a collaboration between universities and Government. The Guidelines are intended to protect universities against foreign interference, through supporting an environment of trust and guiding decision making, based on potential risk, so Australian universities can continue to produce world-class research.

The Guidelines are based on five key principles:

  • Security must safeguard academic freedom, values and research collaboration;
  • Research, collaboration and education activities are mindful of the national interest;
  • Security is collaborative responsibility with individual accountability'
  • Security should be proportionate to organisational risk; and
  • The safety of our university community is paramount.

The University uses the Guidelines as our foundation for risk management in international engagements, and we have implemented our National Security Strategic Framework to put these measure into action.
