Overview

This course builds academic English language skills in Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. Using weekly themes, academic and language skills are combined develop students' ability to participate in academic communication and prepare for university studies.

Entry requirements
To enter the English for Academic Purposes Course students must have:
  • a pass in the English Language Pathways Upper Intermediate Course, or
  • an overall test score of 6.0 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent, provided on application.

Students with an offer for Undergraduate programs may enter this course with an IELTS score of 5.5.

Course learning outcomes
Reading
  • R1: Read and comprehend articles of both academic and general interest
  • R2: Extract main and supporting information from the written text to demonstrate knowledge of the structure of texts.
  • R3: Demonstrate the ability to skim, scan and read for detail.
  • R4: Use context to comprehend unknown vocabulary.
  • R5: Identify the purpose and audience of written texts.
Writing
  • W1: Write a range of grammatical structures and sentence types accurately and appropriately.
  • W2: Communicate effectively by making appropriate lexical choices.
  • W3: Write paragraphs and essays containing appropriate coherence and cohesion devices.
  • W4: Plan, research, and write formal texts of different styles.
  • W5: Correctly use reference material from other authors including paraphrasing, summarising and synthesising, following appropriate academic conventions.
Listening
  • L1: Comprehend spoken texts of both academic and general interest.
  • L2: Extract main and supporting information to demonstrate knowledge of the structure of spoken texts.
  • L3: Comprehend formal and informal conversations and discussions by a range of speakers.
  • L4: Use context to comprehend unknown vocabulary.
  • L5: Identify the purpose and audience of spoken texts.
Speaking
  • S1: Communicate information using a range of grammatical structures and sentence types accurately and appropriately in both formal and informal settings.
  • S2: Communicate effectively by making appropriate lexical choices and using appropriate discourse features.
  • S3: Use language to structure and extend a response appropriately in a range of formal and informal settings.
  • S4: Plan, research, and deliver a presentation on an academic topic following appropriate academic conventions.
  • S5: Engage in formal and informal conversations and discussions with a range of speakers, using a variety of appropriate strategies.
Assessment


Passing the course

HP - Higher level pass for most postgraduate coursework and research programs - Students must obtain 65% or more in three of the four examinations. Only one exam may be in the 60-64% range. Each of the four exams is of equal weighting.

Some courses require higher grades, for example, Health Sciences, Law, M Pharmacy require marks of 70% or more. For full details see the University of Newcastle's English Language Proficiency Policy.

EP - Undergraduate entry pass - for some undergraduate programs and the University of Newcastle College of International Education's Diploma program. Students must obtain 60% or more in each of the four examinations. Each of the four exams is of equal weighting.

LP - Lower level pass - Students must obtain 55% or more in three of the four examinations. Only one exam may be in the 50-54% range. Each of the four exams is of equal weighting.
