Professor Karen Blackmore

Head of School

Professor Karen Blackmore is a distinguished academic leader, steering transformational change to ensure graduates are equipped with the skills and experiences needed to thrive in rapidly evolving industries. As Head of the School of Information and Physical Sciences at the University of Newcastle, she drives strategic initiatives that align with the University's goals of fostering career-ready graduates, integrating cutting-edge research with real-world applications, and strengthening partnerships with industry.

A member of the Australian Council of Senior Academic Leaders in Digital Health, Karen is committed to innovation in education, from degree program development, impactful research and innovation, to operational efficiency, ensuring that both the academic and professional growth of students are prioritised. Her expertise spans human-computer interaction, immersive environments, and simulation-based learning, with her research contributing to international standards through ISO WG 11 for health, safety, and usability of AR/VR technologies.

With over 70 peer-reviewed publications, Karen’s research is globally recognised, with outputs consistently ranked in the top 10% of her field. She is a sought-after speaker and panellist at major simulation, industry, and government events. Karen is also the co-founder of the award-winning HunterWiSE initiative, which is dedicated to increasing female participation in STEM disciplines.

Her previous leadership roles include Deputy President of Academic Senate (Teaching & Learning), Deputy Head of School (Industry & Global Engagement), and Assistant Dean for Work Integrated Learning in the College of Engineering, Science and Environment. Karen continues to lead the School of Information and Physical Sciences with a focus on building strong industry partnerships, embedding work-integrated learning opportunities, and ensuring that the next generation of graduates are well-prepared for the future workforce.
