UON alumnus Nigel Milsom wins Archibald Prize
The Archibald Prize is arguably Australia's most prestigious arts prize with $100 000 awarded to the artist for their original portrait.
Often controversial, but always interesting, Archibald subjects range from politicians, to actors, to self-portraits.
Newcastle-based Milsom's winning piece is of Barrister Charles Waterstreet, a brooding work that captures the essence of its subject beautifully.
Three years in the making, the work has rightly been described by the judges as a clear standout.
There were 832 entrants in the Archibald Prize this year with almost half the 47 finalists being first-time entrants.
Nigel Milsom graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts) from the University of Newcastle in 1998.
The Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts) at UON was renamed Bachelor of Fine Art in 2002, and sits under the School of Creative Arts.
The Archibald Prize 2015, Wynne and Sulman Prize is on at the Art Gallery of NSW from July 18 to September 27.
