Tenders open for nationally significant preclinical imaging capability
The Mark Hughes Foundation Centre for Brain Cancer Research and the University of Newcastle have reached a major milestone in the establishment of a new Preclinical Imaging Facility within the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) Imaging Precinct.
The University has now released a Request for Proposal (RFP) to the market for the supply, installation and commissioning of state-of-the-art preclinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT) capability.
Generously funded by the Mark Hughes Foundation community through the 2026 NRL Beanie for Brain Cancer Round, this significant investment will provide researchers with access to advanced imaging technologies that support the translation of scientific discoveries into improved treatments and outcomes for patients.
The facility will play a critical role in strengthening Australia's preclinical research infrastructure, supporting advanced brain cancer research, theranostics, drug development and translational research programs. Importantly, the capability will be accessible to researchers, industry and collaborative partners from across Australia, providing access to world-class imaging infrastructure outside the nation's capital cities.
This multi-million-dollar initiative is being delivered through a partnership between the Mark Hughes Foundation, the University of Newcastle, the College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing, the National Imaging Facility (NIF) and the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI).
The Request for Proposal was released on 12 August 2026 and will close at 11:00am (AEST) on 7 September 2026.
