University appoints Dr William (Bill) Lyons as PVC Industry and Engagement
The University of Newcastle has appointed global technology executive and innovation leader Dr William (Bill) Lyons as its new Pro Vice-Chancellor Industry and Engagement.
Bringing more than 30 years of experience across aerospace, advanced manufacturing, sustainability, research commercialisation and emerging technologies, Dr Lyons will play a key role in strengthening the University's industry partnerships, driving innovation and translating research excellence into real-world impact.
University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky said Dr Lyons' appointment marked an exciting new chapter in the University's ambition to deepen engagement with industry, government and community partners.
"Dr Bill Lyons is a globally respected leader who has spent his career building powerful connections between research, industry and innovation," Professor Zelinsky said.
"His track record in developing international partnerships, commercialising technology and leading large-scale innovation ecosystems makes him well placed to help advance our strategic priorities. Dr Lyons’ experience and networks will help us create new opportunities for our students, researchers, industry partners and our communities."
Dr Lyons joins the University from Arriva Advisors, the consulting firm he founded to help industrial, aerospace and defence organisations accelerate technology development, strengthen leadership capability and translate innovation into commercial outcomes.
Prior to Arriva Advisors, Dr Lyons spent 27 years with The Boeing Company, where he held senior executive positions, in engineering, R&D and global technology, including Senior Executive Director, Enterprise Technology Strategy, Capabilities and Partnerships. In this capacity he was responsible all of the company’s research partnerships with universities and national labs.
During his tenure at Boeing, Dr Lyons led the company's global innovation strategy and managed a multibillion-dollar annual research and development investment across fields including artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, digital engineering, sustainability, systems engineering, and autonomous technologies.
Together with government, university and industrial partners he has established more than 20 global consortia that have transformed regional communities and developed new industrial capabilities in aerospace, defence and manufacturing.
He also played a key role in establishing and expanding global engineering and innovation capabilities, building global research and engineering centres, international partnerships with leading universities, research institutions, venture capital organisations, and industry partners.
Dr Lyons has led the development of global innovation precincts. He co-founded the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre at the University of Sheffield, a facility which integrates a dedicated local advanced manufacturing plant with cutting-edge research capabilities.
Dr Lyons holds a PhD in Atmospheric Physics from the University of Queensland, an Executive MBA in Leadership from Seattle University, and first-class honours degrees in Computer Science and Atmospheric Science from James Cook University.
Dr Bill Lyons will commence in the role of Pro Vice-Chancellor Industry and Engagement on 28 September 2026.
