Nathan Towney appointed as Deputy Vice-Chancellor Engagement and Equity
The University of Newcastle has today announced the appointment of Nathan Towney as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Engagement and Equity.
A proud Wiradjuri man, Mr Towney brings extensive leadership experience across higher education, government, sport and community to the role and to the University of Newcastle’s Executive Leadership Team.
An alumnus of the University of Newcastle, Mr Towney has a strong track record of building partnerships that deliver lasting impact and has played a pivotal role in positioning the University of Newcastle as a national leader in equity, inclusion and Indigenous advancement.
University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky said Mr Towney’s appointment reflected his outstanding leadership, deep connection to community and strong commitment to advancing access to higher education.
“Mr Towney’s passion for empowering people, fostering connection and creating pathways to success shines through in everything he does,” Professor Zelinsky said.
“Nathan is highly respected across our community and his leadership has been instrumental in, inclusion, opportunity and social impact across our University. He has led with distinction, authenticity and a deep commitment to our University’s values, and he will continue to strengthen our University’s engagement efforts and create opportunities that enable all members of our University community to thrive.”
Mr Towney has served as Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor Engagement and Equity since March 2025, leading significant work including the development of the University’s Engagement Plan 2026-2030, the University’s response to the National Higher Education Code to Prevent and Respond to Gender Based Violence and Anti-racism, and the development of a new Equity, Diversity and Inclusion framework.
He is also guiding the implementation of the Wollotuka Cultural Standards across the University and leading the Community Partnerships function across sport, culture and the arts, creating opportunities for students, staff and the broader community.
Mr Towney was appointed as Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University’s Indigenous, Strategy and Leadership division in 2019, and led the College of Human and Social Futures as Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor in 2023.
Before joining the University of Newcastle, Mr Towney spent 20 years in public education, including serving as Principal of Newcastle High School. An alumnus of our University, Nathan holds a Bachelor of Teaching, and a Bachelor of Health and Physical Education.
