Enter a high-demand podiatry career identified as a national skills shortage, where industry-informed training and strong clinical networks ensure you graduate job-ready with the skills employers are actively seeking.
The Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine is a four‑year degree designed to build strong clinical confidence through extensive, hands‑on experience. Guided by experienced podiatrists, you’ll develop practical, patient‑facing skills in diagnosing, treating, and preventing foot and lower limb conditions. You’ll also help prevent related issues such as back and joint pain caused by changes in posture, walking, and running. Specialist clinic areas include sports injuries, biomechanics, paediatrics, surgery, and more.
You’ll also have the opportunity to apply for the endorsed scheduled medicines pathway. This will prepare you for advanced clinical responsibilities, including administering medicines as part of patient care.

Career opportunities
On completion of this degree, you’ll be able to work in a range of health environments, such as general or specialised podiatry practice (e.g sports podiatry), private and public practices, hospitals, rehabilitation and community health centres, sports clinics, research centres and consultancy.

Course overview
The Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine includes an option for scheduled medicines.
Students taking the option for scheduled medicine will take part in a special clinical program in year 4 designed to develop skills for registration with the Podiatry Board of Australia.
As part of your studies you will:
- Learn how to identify and analyse complex health problems within podiatry practice and develop solutions to these problems.
- Learn to work within a multidisciplinary health team to best meet patients’ health needs.
- Undertake rural and regional health placements at our podiatry clinics.
- Develop critical research skills that will set you in good stead for life-long learning as a podiatrist.
There is an option for high-achieving students to embed honours-level research courses over the final 1.5 years of the program. If this option is something you would be interested in, please discuss this with your academics/supervisors in the program.

Students complete more than 1,000 hours of practical experience during their second, third and fourth year of studies which will help them to become ‘life ready graduates’. The program strongly supports students with multidisciplinary experiences that will help the transition into the workforce. Work alongside experienced podiatrists in the University of Newcastle Student Podiatry Clinic's located at Wyong Hospital and Newcastle Community Health Service (Hunter Street). Students also partake in external placements in rural and regional areas. Our graduates are highly sought-after with the experience and knowledge they gain during their studies.
