The Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine (Honours) is a four-year degree that equips you with the knowledge and clinical skills to meet the prescribing competencies required for registration with the Podiatry Board of Australia. You'll graduate prepared for advanced clinical practice, with the skills to safely prescribe and administer scheduled medicines as part of patient care.
Guided by experienced podiatrists, you’ll develop practical, patient‑facing skills in diagnosing, treating, and preventing foot and lower limb conditions. You’ll also help prevent related issues such as back and joint pain caused by changes in posture, walking, and running. Specialist clinic areas include sports injuries, biomechanics, paediatrics, surgery, and more.
We offer a guaranteed entry pathway into the Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine (Honours) program for those who have completed the HLT43021 Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance course. For more information, visit Guaranteed Entry.
Career opportunities
On completion of this degree, you’ll be able to work in a range of health environments, such as general or specialised podiatry practice (e.g sports podiatry), private and public practices, hospitals, rehabilitation and community health centres, sports clinics, research centres and consultancy.

As part of your studies you will:
- Learn how to identify and analyse complex health problems within podiatry practice and develop solutions to these problems.
- Learn to work within a multidisciplinary health team to best meet patients’ health needs.
- Undertake rural and regional health placements at our podiatry clinics.
- Develop critical research skills that will set you in good stead for life-long learning as a podiatrist.
- Complete Honours-level research courses with the option to undertake an individual supervised research project.

Students complete more than 1,000 hours of practical experience during their second, third and fourth year of studies which will help them to become ‘life ready graduates’. The program strongly supports students with multidisciplinary experiences that will help the transition into the workforce. Work alongside experienced podiatrists in the University of Newcastle Student Podiatry Clinic's located at Wyong Hospital and Newcastle Community Health Service (Hunter Street). Students also partake in external placements in rural and regional areas. Our graduates are highly sought-after with the experience and knowledge they gain during their studies.

After hearing about the clinic on ABC radio, Peter made an appointment with Victoria Bennett, now a podiatrist practising in Canberra but then a student in the final weeks of her degree. How to apply
Apply as a domestic student
You are a domestic student if you are:
- An Australian or New Zealand citizen (including dual citizens)
- A permanent resident of Australia
- A holder of a permanent Australian visa.
Apply as an international student
Entry requirements — Senior secondary school qualification
Admission to our undergraduate degree programs usually requires successful completion of a senior secondary school qualification similar to the Higher School Certificate (HSC), the highest educational award in New South Wales schools.
English proficiency requirements
Applicants who do not speak English as a first language must demonstrate that they meet the University's English proficiency requirement. Further information regarding English language proficiency requirements can be found at the English Language Proficiency for Admission Policy.

Apply to the University via our online application portal.
In the application portal, you can enter the program you wish to study and upload relevant documents needed as part of your application. It is recommended you submit your application a minimum of 12 weeks before your intended semester of trimester start date.
If you are applying through an education agent, they can also apply through the application portal. Ensure your agent is contracted to the University to avoid delays with your application.
Once you have started your application you will be provided with a reference number. You or your education agent will be able to track your application as it progresses.
