Project overview
The University of Newcastle is expanding its industrial research precinct to help the region develop the critical skills needed for the energy transition.
The Next Generation Resources Park will incorporate the existing 3.8hectare NIER precinct, the newly commissioned Modern Manufacturing Workshop and Advanced Prototyping Facility, as well as two new facilities providing specialist equipment, hands-on training and partnerships with industry to ensure our graduates are job‑ready for the region’s new energy opportunities:
The Future Industries Facility (FIF)
A purpose-built co-location facility enabling research experts, industry and end-users to collaborate on pre-commercial trials and testing. Market driven and industry-led, the Future Industries Facility (FIF) is a catalyst for new technologies, education and training.
The Australian Government is investing $20.7 million in the Future Industries Facility through the Regional Precincts and Partnership Program, with the University contributing the remaining $2 million.
New Energy Skills Hub
A first-of-its-kind for the region, the New Energy Skills Hub will consist of an open plan workshop area with specialised equipment across five dedicated functional zones for education, training, testing and demonstration. It will also serve as a testbed for industry, providing the tools and capability to test and enhance systems and components in a range of environments.
The $20 million Skills Hub is funded by a $16 million Australian Government investment under the Priority Community Infrastructure Program, recognising the Hunter’s central role in building Australia’s future clean‑energy workforce. The University is contributing $4 million towards construction and delivery
Next steps
- We are here: Grindley Construction has been appointed to deliver the main construction work for the New Energy Skills Hub, with construction beginning in March 2026.
- Upcoming: Construction will begin on the Future Industries Facility in 2026. The Precinct is expected to be complete in Q1 of 2027.
