Alumni and Community House

Following a detailed review undertaken in 2025, the University Council has endorsed a revised and very positive direction for Alumni & Community House.
This change reflects the need to respond responsibly to the significant rise in construction costs since the project was first conceived, which have increased by more than 50 percent across the sector. In light of these conditions, the University will proceed with a more financially sustainable approach: refurbishing Northumberland House, a heritage-listed landmark in the heart of Newcastle’s cultural precinct, rather than constructing a new building.
Importantly, the project will continue to be known as Alumni & Community House, and its mission remains unchanged: to create a welcoming, purposeful space that brings people together to connect, learn and celebrate.
I am also pleased to share that fundraising for the project is now complete; reaching this milestone is a testament to the passion, belief, and collective commitment of you, our valued donors.
Detailed design work will commence in 2026, with construction to follow in 2027.
