Program handbook
Description
Within the combined degree program, students study a combination of Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) courses over a period of five years full-time. On completion of the first three years students will have completed all the courses required for the Bachelor of Business degree. In the final two years of the combined degree program students complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and may enrol in these two years on a less than full time basis.
Students completing this combined degree program become specialists in Business and meet the academic requirements to practice law in NSW. However, students wishing to practice law must also complete postgraduate professional training approved by the Legal Profession Admission Board. Alternatively, students completing this degree may apply for entry to the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) /Diploma of Legal Practice Program - see separate handbook entry - which allows immediate admission to legal practice on graduation.
Commencement in this program is only available in Semester 1. Due to timetabling issues this program is not available for a Semester 2 commencement.

Admission information
Admission requirements
There are a number of ways to gain entry to the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) program at the University of Newcastle. Students may be considered for admission on the basis of:
1. NSW HSC or equivalent - irrespective of age of qualification;
2. Completed or partly completed higher education studies;
3. TAFE qualifications;
4. Overseas qualifications equivalent to Australian studies (International);
5 A University approved special admission adjustment factor scheme:
- Educational Access Scheme (EAS); and
- Regional and Rural Adjustment Scheme.
6. A University approved special admission scheme:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Admission Scheme;
- Elite Athletes Admission Scheme;
- Special Circumstances Admission Scheme; and
- Guaranteed Entry Admission Scheme.
Students must comply with the University of Newcastle's English language proficiency requirements.

International students studying this program on campus are required to enrol full time to comply with their student visa requirements and complete their study in the standard minimum program duration. Program requirements
The Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Laws (Honours) is undertaken over five years of full-time study. The combined degree program involves completion of 160 units of courses from the Bachelor of Business and 240 units of LAWS courses from the Bachelor of Laws (Honours).
To meet the requirements of the Bachelor of Business you must complete 160 units, including 60 units of Core Business Courses, a major sequence of study and up to 40 units of elective courses. Please refer to the Program Description for the Bachelor of Business for further details on course requirements within each Major Sequence. Please note combined Law students receive an exemption for LEGL1001 in the Business degree.
Students studying the Human Resource Management major must choose LAWS5009 Employment Law rather than LEGL3111.
Credit towards the Bachelor of Business degree is granted for the 80 units of the Bachelor of Laws courses taken in the first three years, taking the total Bachelor of Business units to 240. On successful completion of the first three years of the combined degree program outlined above, you will have completed all the required courses for the Bachelor of Business degree.
To meet the requirements for the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree you must complete 240 units, including 160 units of Core Laws courses and 80 units directed Laws courses. Students studying the HRM cannot count LAWS5009 Employment Law as part of the 80 units of directed courses. The final two years of the combined degree program comprises study in LAWS courses only.

Transition arrangements
Changes to Law Core Courses - 2020
From 2020, the following Law core courses have been replaced as listed below:
- LAWS1001A and B replaced with LAWS1010 legal System and Method I and LAWS1020 Torts I
- LAWS2001A and B replaced with LAWS2030 Criminal Law and Procedure and LAWS4001 Consitutional Law
- LAWS3001A and B replaced with LAWS3040 Contracts I and LAWS3041 Contracts II
Politics Major - 2021
From 2021, the Governance, Policy and Political Economy major will be replaced with the Politics and International Relations major.
All students will transition from the Governance, Policy and Political Economy major to the Politics and International Relations major from Semester 1, 2021. All courses completed toward the Governance, Policy and Political Economy major will count toward the Politics and International Relations major. All students must complete the new compulsory course POLI3180 Policy, Politics and Government unless they have already completed POLI2180 Politics, Policy and Government.
Tourism Major - 2021
From 2021, the Tourism Management major will be discontinued and replaced with the Tourism and Event Management major.
Students who have completed 30 units or more toward the Tourism Management major by the end of 2020, will be given an opportunity to complete this major. These students will be advised to complete remaining compulsory courses by the end of 2021.
Students who have completed 20 units or less toward the Tourism Management major by the end of 2020, will be required to transition to the new Tourism and Event Management major in Semester 1, 2021.
Sports Management Major - 2021
The Sports Management major will be discontinued from 2021.
Students who have completed 20 units or more toward the Sports Management major by the end of 2020 will be given an opportunity to complete this major. These students will be advised to complete LEIS3001 Sports Leadership by the end of 2021, and the remaining compulsory courses by the end of 2022. Three of the remaining Compulsory courses will be replaced with new courses in 2021 as indicated below:
- LEIS2000 Sports Operations Management replaced with LEIS2001 Event Operations Management
- LEIS3000 Managing Events replaced with LEIS3003 Event Strategy and Leadership
- LEIS2100 Volunteer Management replaced with LEIS3100 Volunteer Management
Students who have completed 10 units toward the Sports Management major by the end of 2020 will not be able to complete this major. These students may choose to complete the new Tourism and Event Management major from Semester 1, 2021.
Changes to Law Directed Courses - 2021
Some 5000 Level LAWS Directed courses have been replaced with 6000 Level LAWS Directed courses in 2021. All 5000 and 6000 Level LAWS Directed courses completed prior to 2021 will continue to count toward completion of the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) program.

Honours
Honours is embedded in the Law component of this program. All students who successfully complete the program will graduate with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours). Students who excel in their studies will have access to graded Honours, which will be calculated according to the University's policy.
