The University of Newcastle's main campus at Callaghan is only 12 kilometres north-west from pristine beaches and Newcastle CBD. Entrances are located off University Drive, Stannett Street and Wirra Crescent.

Callaghan is well serviced by both bus and train services and has excellent access to the F3 Freeway.

Parking at Callaghan

Monday to Friday (8:00am to 5:30pm) parking is available with a valid permit or by purchasing a parking ticket. At all other times, parking is free. The University's traffic and parking rules apply at all times.

Parking permits

Students can purchase either an annual or six month permit. Purchasing a parking permit does not guarantee you a parking bay, but it does mean you don’t need to find change or stop and pay at a ticket machine. Click here to find out more.

Ticketed parking

Coin and credit card operated ticket machines are located throughout the campus if you do not wish to purchase a parking permit. The 2021 daily rate for parking is $4.60. Please note that the machines do not give change.

Free parking

Car park 14 has been designated as free parking as it is well sealed, lit and has CCTV coverage over the parking area. The sealed section of car park 16 is also free to park in. To see free parking locations, click here.

The NUspace and Callaghan Security Shuttle both stop at car park 14 to assist with campus connectivity. Both of these shuttles can be tracked using the MyUON app.

Visitor parking

Visitors may only park in General Parking Areas, which you can find on the Callaghan parking map. Coin and credit card operated ticket machines are located throughout the campus. The machines do not give change.

Scratch and display day permits are available for advance purchase from the Infrastructure and Facilities Services team, located in the Services building on the Callaghan campus. Permits can only be purchased in packs of 10 minimum by individuals and packs of 100 by Colleges, Divisions and Units using EFTPOS only. Permits must be displayed on the vehicle dashboard with the correct month, day and date scratched.

Accessible parking

Any person who has been granted a NSW or inter-state Mobility Parking Scheme permit, including an Australian Disability Permit, is able to park in Disabled, Staff and General bays free of charge. Your valid parking scheme permits must be clearly displayed on the passenger side of your front windscreen. Please note that RTA Mobility Parking Scheme conditions apply.

If you require closer parking due to a temporary medical condition, you can apply for a University disability access permit by contacting the AccessAbility team

Motorcycle parking

Motorcycle parking on Callaghan and Ourimbah campuses is free, and no permit is required as long as the motorcycles is parked in a designated motorcycle parking bay only. Motorcycles located in bays other than the designated areas may be subject to a fine.

We have designated NRMA meeting places across Callaghan campus to make it easy for NRMA representatives to find you if you're having car trouble. If you are having trouble and require the services of the NRMA, please call them to report your issue and make your way to the nearest meeting place.

  • Design Building and the Mathematics Building on campus
  • University Drive just outside campus.

Warabrook Station is located on the edge of the Callaghan campus. You can choose to walk from the station or catch the Safety and Security shuttle that has a stop right outside.

Travel concessions

If you're a full time, on campus student, you may be entitled to a travel concession. If you are getting the travel concession for the first time you will need to complete a consent form via myHub, wait 2 business days then apply for your Concession Opal card via OPAL. Further details including how to complete the online consent form are available at AskUON.

Callaghan has free shuttle services for students and staff to get you to and from – or around – campus.

NUspace shuttle

With many students splitting time between Callaghan and NUspace, the University is offering a free express service that makes six stops within Callaghan campus before arriving at King Street outside of University House at NUspace. Please ensure you show the driver your student ID when boarding the bus.

  • Peak hours: Departing every 30 minutes, the service will commence at 7:15am, with the last service arriving at Callaghan at 10:50pm.
  • Off peak hours: Departing every hour, the service will commence at 7:15am, with the last service arriving at Callaghan at 10:05pm.
  • The shuttle does not operate during the uni shutdown period or on public holidays.

Station Shuttle route

Connecting the train station with Callaghan campus this service operates Monday to Friday during semester between 8:00am - 10:00am and 4:00pm - 6:00pm. The service operates on a continuous loop stopping at Warabrook Train Station (carpark 16) and Shortland Union building (carpark 5).

Between the Station shuttle route times the shuttle bus will operate on a continuous loop around Callaghan campus between 10:00am - 4:00pm. If you miss the NUspace shuttle you can catch the Campus Shuttle.

Security Night shuttle

From 6:00pm up until 1:00am you can call the Security Night shuttle to arrange a pick up. The Security Night shuttle takes passengers to locations on-campus and also nearby suburbs including Jesmond, Shortland, Birmingham Gardens and Waratah West.

Cycling is a great way to get to and around Callaghan campus. Numerous on road and off road bike paths connect the campus to Newcastle and surrounds.

Bike Hubs

Secure Bike Hubs with end of trip facilities and a range of bike racks are available across campus.

The hubs are undercover, secure bike storage spaces with end of trip facilities and bike repair equipment.

You need to swipe your student card to gain entry to the hubs.

Traffic and parking rules apply at all of our campuses. Students, staff and visitors to the University park their vehicle on campus at their own risk. Non-university owned vehicles are not covered by the University's insurance.

Parking infringements

Revenue NSW processes parking infringements issued on the University campus on behalf of the University. The penalties applied are those provided for under the NSW Motor Traffic Regulations.

If you're coming from overseas to study to the University of Newcastle, we recommend arriving 5-7 days before your commencement date to give you time to settle in to your new home and attend orientation.
