Learn more about Inverell
Inverell is surrounded by smaller villages and regional communities, making it a great base for exploring the New England North West. Discover local museums, galleries and boutique stores, or try your hand at fossicking in the region’s waterways, where amateur fossickers have uncovered beautiful blue sapphires.
There are also plenty of opportunities to get outdoors, with hiking, camping, limestone caves and waterfalls to explore at Kwiambal National Park and Goonoowigall State Conservation Area. Lake Inverell and Copeton Dam — more than three times the size of Sydney Harbour — are popular spots for fishing, kayaking, water skiing and other water activities, particularly during the warmer months.
Our Inverell education centre is located within the grounds of McLean Care at 67 Killean Street. The dedicated learning space is equipped with technology and resources students need for study. The centre provides a supportive environment for individual study, group work and learning activities, giving students a convenient base close to their placement sites.
Inverell Hospital provides a range of acute medical, surgical, renal, paediatric and maternity inpatient services. Facilities include an Emergency Department, diagnostic imaging services such as CT, X-ray and ultrasound, pathology and a range of allied health services.
A comprehensive community health service also operates from the hospital, delivering approximately 20 programs to support the health and wellbeing of the local community.
Allied health and nursing students can apply for subsidised accommodation in our two three-bedroom villas, located a short drive from Inverell Hospital and our education centre. A small number of additional nurses’ quarters, owned by Hunter New England Local Health District, are also available within the hospital grounds. If our accommodation is full, students can contact the hospital to check availability.
If student accommodation is unavailable or full, we may be able to subsidise the cost of alternative accommodation, helping make your rural placement experience more affordable. Detailed accommodation information is available in the Student Orientation Manual.
Medical students undertaking a full clinical year at one of our Rural Clinical School sites also have the opportunity to spend at least one full semester in Inverell. Accommodation for this program is located a short drive from the hospital and town centre.
As a student with us, you’ll have opportunities to get involved in community engagement activities across Inverell and the surrounding region. These experiences provide opportunities to connect with local communities and gain a deeper understanding of health and wellbeing in a regional setting.
