Interprofessional learning

Interprofessional learning (IPL) brings students from different health disciplines together to learn with, from and about each other. You’ll share knowledge, perspectives and experiences while exploring how different health professionals work together to provide safe, effective and patient-centred care.

Quality healthcare relies on strong teamwork. Understanding the roles, expertise and responsibilities of other health professionals can help break down barriers, improve communication and strengthen collaboration. IPL gives you the opportunity to develop these skills before entering the workforce.

Modules

While on rural placement, you’ll be invited to take part in IPL modules with students from a range of health disciplines. Most modules follow a patient through different stages of their healthcare journey, from diagnosis and treatment through to health promotion and ongoing care.

You’ll work together with other students, academic staff and clinicians, and in some cases interact with simulated patients. These activities give you the opportunity to put teamwork and communication skills into practice while gaining a better understanding of the roles and perspectives of other health professions.

It’s also a great way to meet students outside your own discipline and build connections across the health professions.

Team-based practice

Many IPL scenarios reflect the realities of healthcare in regional, rural and remote communities, where health professionals often work closely across disciplines and services to meet the needs of their local communities.

The rural context provides a valuable opportunity to see team-based care in action. However, these skills are important wherever you work. Learning how to communicate effectively, understand the contribution of other professionals and work together around the needs of the patient can help improve health outcomes and the overall experience of care.
