Engage with us

Engagement is a key pillar to success. It’s part of everything we do. By engaging with our regions, we find practical ways to build stronger communities, bring the world closer to a sustainable future and harness innovation to help grow industries.

Our College is collaborating with a Newcastle-based hotel to innovate solutions for managing hospitality waste, our Alumni are giving future students the opportunity to succeed, our researchers are investigating treatment for debilitating  diseases that affect the community, and we’re home to award-winning start-ups paving the way for a more sustainable future.

Whether it’s to satisfy a general curiosity or nurture a more consolidated interest, our College fosters  engagement opportunities for all ages in our communities. Our Psychology Clinics at Callaghan and Ourimbah campuses offer high-quality, low-cost care to the local community, while also providing a training facility for postgraduate students. We work with local partners to promote accessible, innovative events and activities geared towards exploring topics relating to science, engineering and technology. Led by our world-class STEM professionals, these initiatives enrich understanding and widen participation in our communities.

Our Science Maths and Real Technology (SMART) program and Science and Engineering Challenge engage school children and teachers in a range of innovative outreach activities led by our students, researchers and staff. As well as our Science in Practice event, which was offered online to University and school students, Academics, professionals, and the wider community.

We welcome opportunities for industry to engage with us. Hosting an internship, leading a fieldwork expedition, or briefing our students to design an architectural solution – we can facilitate a range of flexible options for industry to partner with us.

The BiG Day In events are aimed at senior secondary school and university students interested in careers in ICT and technology. BiG Day In helps students obtain more information about ICT and technology careers.

Sarah Gray - Industry Scholar

The Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment at the University of Newcastle has an enviable reputation as one of the best of its kind in Australia. We are responsible for the training and educating of many leading professionals and researchers at the cutting edge of engineering and the built environment around the world.

Our partnerships with industry help to strengthen ties between professional practice and education, and bring real-world experience into our research laboratories and teaching. Working with industry helps us maintain a ‘forward-looking’ approach to education. We are committed to building long- term relationships that mutually benefit all parties, and to expanding these relationships for the future.

student learning experienceEnhance the student learning experience

Help us create a dynamic learning community that prepares our students for global citizenship. Our high achieving students might be your future recruits; interacting with them is an opportunity to shape their future to the benefit of all involved. It’s also a great way to raise your organisation’s profile and promote your brand within the community.

Participation in teaching activities

The College extends a warm invitation to industry professionals willing and able to contribute guest lectures. The topic is up to you – it might be recapping a recent project, discussing innovative technology, or just offering expertise relevant to our courses. This assists students to link theory and practice, and better understand the opportunities and challenges confronting regional organisations and industries.

Host an industry visit

Allow us to bring our students to you to showcase your organisation’s daily operations. Industry visits are an excellent opportunity to provide context to course materials and awaken students to the career opportunities available in our local area.

work with studentsWork with our students

Involve Engineering and Built Environment students directly with your business. Through placements, projects and scholarships, your organisation can form a relationship with a current student and help them gain real world experience. Short or long term options are available.

Placements and Practicums

The goal of a practicum or placement is to provide an opportunity for students to apply the knowledge and skills they have learnt and gained from their degree within a range of work environments. This gives students an opportunity to practice their skills in relevant situations and to appreciate the variety of professional roles in the field. Furthermore, it enables students to observe and experience how their theoretical knowledge and skills can be applied in a vocational setting

Industrial experience

As a compulsory requirement all engineering and construction management students are required to complete 12-16 weeks of practical work experience before graduation. Hosting students for industrial experience can be an excellent way to hand pick future employees and familiarise them with your business. With students in a wide range of engineering, computing and built environment disciplines, there’s bound to be someone with the interest and knowledge to match your business needs. Work experience can be either paid or unpaid. All students on unpaid work experience are fully covered by University insurance.

Final year project

Final year projects are an integral part of all of our programs. Industry-based final year projects provide an excellent vehicle for developing links with the College and gaining access to talented students to work on real problems within your business. Timelines range, and students can work individually or in teams. Each project also benefits from direct supervision by expert academic staff from the relevant area. Students can volunteer or be employed directly by the industry partner.

Research scholarships

Industry-funded research scholarships can be created for undergraduate and postgraduate students to either help them complete their studies, or facilitate a specific placement. These scholarships and placements can range from 1-5 years, with funding from an individual industry partner.

ENGAGE WITH US

researchDevelop our expertise as we develop yours

Work with us to identify the training, skills and knowledge sets needed to ensure individual and organisational success. The University of Newcastle has a wealth of advanced research expertise that may not be available within your organisation. Collaboration with industry also helps us better understand how our research can benefit your industry.

APR intern

The Australian Government has a range of rebates available to help facilitate the short-term placement of PhD students into Australian businesses.

philanthropyContribute through a philanthropic donation

By investing in a student’s education, you are investing in the future prosperity of our region. A donation could help a student overcoming hardship to fulfil their dreams, or reward a high achiever for their hard work. Such contributions are public recognition for your support of University students and projects, and help raise the profile of philanthropy to those connected to your organisation.

Donate a scholarship

Scholarships provide valuable support to students, and your example will help encourage them to share their talents. Scholarships also provide encouragement and recognition to our best and brightest to continue their hard work within our community.

Awards and prizes

Set up a one-off or annually- recurring prize to award a high- achieving student in a degree area related to your organisation. The terms of the award are determined by you, and the title of the prize will acknowledge your generosity. This is a great way to foster the talent of tomorrow’s leaders.

Support of leadership and learning environment

Making a contribution toward a strategic leadership position (lectureship or professorship) or the physical learning environment of students (such as teaching spaces, libraries and student collaboration spaces) are two of the most impactful ways to contribute to both the University and the community.
