Five Must Know Tips for Postgrad Success
Applying for a postgraduate qualification can feel like a big decision that requires careful thought. But don't worry—we've streamlined the process into five key steps to make it easier for you!
Step 1: Know Your Why
Understanding why you want to study is crucial. Are you aiming for a promotion or a complete career change? Knowing your goals will help you choose the right degree. Whether it’s a generic or specialised qualification, a full Master’s degree, or a shorter Graduate Certificate, aligning your study with your career aspirations is essential.
Step 2: Research Your Degree
Explore your areas of interest to work out which degree is right for you. You can check program duration, modes of delivery (online or face-to-face), and access detailed Program Handbooks. It’s all about finding the right fit for you.
Step 3: Understand Fees and Costs
Most postgraduate programs at the University of Newcastle are full fee-paying, but you don’t need to pay upfront for the entire program. With staggered payments and the Australian Government’s FEE-HELP loan scheme, financing your studies is manageable. Also, check out scholarship opportunities that might be available to you.

Step 4: Leverage University Support Systems
The University of Newcastle offers a range of support services, including academic support as well as personal support services like counselling, financial assistance, and health and wellbeing tips.
Step 5: Understand the Application Process
Applying is straightforward and takes around 10 minutes with no fee for direct applications. Most applications can be submitted through the Online Application Portal, though some programs like the Master of Clinical Psychology require applications through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). By following these steps, you can confidently navigate the postgraduate application process and take your career to new heights. Ready to get started? Now’s the time to make it happen.
