Pathways to Undergrad

How to apply

There are two ways to apply for your undergraduate degree.

Direct Application

Submitting your direct application

Applications to study at the University of Newcastle in Semester 1, 2024 are closed.

  1. When applications are open, click on the ‘Apply Now’ button below to access the application form.
  2. Complete the form, selecting up to 3 preferences. You don’t have to select 3 preferences, but it’s a good idea to have a back up plan in case you don’t meet the admission criteria for your first preference. You should include at least one degree from the Guaranteed Admissions Programs.
  3. There will be a section in the application where you can attach any other relevant documents – see what to include with your application below.
  4. After you have entered all relevant information, selected your preferences and uploaded any additional documentation, make sure you press the submit button before application closing date.

What to include in your application

If you have other assessable qualifications that can be used to generate an admissions rank, you have the option of attaching them to your application. Examples of qualifications that can be used to generate a rank include:

  • Certificate III
  • Certificate IV
  • Diploma
  • Advanced Diploma
  • STAT Test Results
  • Tertiary Preparation Certificate
  • Undergraduate Study at other Universities

If attaching qualifications to your application, please ensure you include an certificates of completion as well as relevant transcripts. Please note that we can only accept colour copies of original documents, or copies that have been certified.

We will review any qualifications and incorporate them in the asessemnt of your application where most applicable. Don’t worry if you don’t have any additional qualifications – most students don’t and we primarily just use results from your Enabling Pathways studies.

If you’d like to apply for the Educational Access Scheme (EAS) you’ll need to add the completed form to your direct application. See the Educational Disadvantage section below for more information.

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) has introduced updated English language skills standards for all applicants for accredited nursing and midwifery programs.

Before being considered for admission to either the Bachelor of Nursing or Bachelor of Midwifery programs, all applicants must complete a declaration confirming that they satisfy one of the following ANMAC pathways:

  • English is your primary language - You have attended and satisfactorily completed at least six years of primary and secondary education (including at least two years between years 7 and 12) in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom or United States of America; OR
  • English is NOT your primary language – you have undertaken an accepted English Language Proficiency test no more than two years before commencement of the degree for which you are applying (evidence of test completion must be provided); OR
  • You are an enrolled or registered nurse with current AHPRA registration - English language requirements will have been demonstrated for enrolled nurse registration (evidence of registration must be provided).

During your direct application to Nursing, or UAC application to Midwifery and/or Nursing, you will be presented with a questionnaire and be required to declare which of the 3 pathways above applies to you.

Accepted English Language Proficiency Tests and Required Scores*

  • IELTS (academic module) with a minimum overall score of 7 and a minimum score of 7 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking).

*the same provision for results from two test sittings from the AHPRA registration standards apply.

Please visit the AHPRA website for more information

Students applying for B Music and Performing Arts and/or B Music and Performing Arts / B Arts are also required to complete the additional entry requirements before we can assess their eligibility for a place in these programs. Applicants should complete the Music Selection Process as early as possible to ensure that their audition can be assessed, and we can take the application into consideration.

UAC Application

The only University of Newcastle degree that requires an application through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) for Pathways students is the Bachelor of Midwifery. All other degrees can be applied for using the FREE direct application.

Important: If you are planning to submit a UAC application for Midwifery, or any other University in NSW, you should include your University of Newcastle preferences in your UAC application. Please do not submit a direct application if you are applying through UAC.

If you would like to apply for an Australian University in another state of territory you’ll need to apply through the relevant Tertiary Admissions Centre.

Apply through UAC

UAC application tips

  • You will be allocated a UAC Application Number and a PIN – make a note of these numbers.
  • Pathways students must apply as a Non-Year 12 Applicant
  • You are not applying through Alternate Entry
  • List your Open Foundation/Yapug/Newstep program under ‘Preparatory Courses’
  • Print/Download your application summary listing your qualifications and preferences for your records

Entry Schemes

There are entry schemes aimed to help you get into your desired degree.

Educational disadvantage

The University supports students who have experienced long-term educational disadvantage and recognises nine broad categories as outlined on the UAC website. If your current studies have been affected then please refer to the information available on UAC about EAS categories of disadvantage and required documents. A copy of the University of Newcastle EAS form for direct applicants is available here and within the direct enabling to undergraduate degree application. Please complete this and upload, along with supporting documentation, as part of your direct online application.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

If you identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, you can indicate that you would also like to be considered under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Entry Scheme. If you tick the relevant box in the direct application form you'll be asked to participate in a short interview which can give you an extra few points on your University Admissions Rank (UAR) for entry into any degree that is not on the Guaranteed Admissions Scheme. You are not required to apply through UAC.

To be eligible for this scheme, you'll need to provide Confirmation of Aboriginality. An application can be submitted along with supporting documentation through the Applicant portal.

Available in Semester 1 intake only

Each year, up to 17 places are set aside for admission into the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (Joint Medical Program) for applicants of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent through the Miroma Bunbilla Pre-Entry pathway. UAR Estimator

When you complete your Enabling Pathways program, your grades will be used to calculate a University Admission Rank (UAR), similar to but not equivalent to an ATAR. This rank is based on your average weighted mark and used to assess your admission into any University of Newcastle degree that is not on the guaranteed entry list.

You will not be formally advised of your UAR, however using the tool below you can calculate an estimated ranking for the next intake.

FAQs

If you've got questions, we've got answers. Have a look at these FAQs often asked by our students applying from an Enabling Pathway program to an undergraduate degree.

Once you have submitted your direct application, you can change your preferences, add documents, or cancel your request by completing the following steps:

  1. Log in to AskUON
  2. Click on My Account on the right-hand menu
  3. Scroll down to the My Applications section
  4. Click on your application to open it
  5. Make any changes then resubmit your application

All changes to your application must be made by the application closing date.

If you have applied through UAC, you’ll need to access your application on the website.

We take the course marks you achieved in your Enabling Pathways program and convert them to a University Admissions Rank (UAR). We then compare that rank to the admissions rank required for entry to your first preference. If your admissions rank is equal to or higher than the rank required for your first preference, we will make you an offer to your first preference via your preferred email.

If your admissions rank does not satisfy the rank required for your first preference, we will then compare your rank to the admissions rank required for entry to your second preference. If your admissions rank is equal to or higher than the rank required for your second preference, we will make you an offer to your second preference via your preferred email.

If your admissions rank does not satisfy the rank required for your first or second preference, we will then compare your rank to the admissions rank required for entry to your third preference. If your admissions rank is equal to or higher than the rank required for your third preference, we will make you an offer to your third preference via your preferred email.

TIP: You will not be formally advised of your UAR, but you can use the UAR estimator tool above to calculate an estimated ranking for the next intake.

If you don’t meet the rank for any of your preferences, and/or you haven’t selected a program from the Guaranteed Admissions Scheme we will be in contact to discuss what happens next.

The Guaranteed Admissions Scheme grants guaranteed entry into a selected list of degrees for students who have completed an enabling program at the University of Newcastle (Open Foundation, Newstep or Yapug). Students are only required to pass the requirements of the enabling program to be guaranteed an offer to any degree on the list.

You are strongly recommended to include a degree from the Guaranteed Admissions Scheme in your preferences. That way, if you didn’t get the marks to grant you entry into your first or second preference you will still receive an offer into an undergraduate program at the University of Newcastle.

You can submit your application as soon as it opens, you don't need to wait until you receive your results. You'll be able to access your application to update your preferences or provide supporting documents up until the closing date.

There are only a few days between the Fully Graded Date and the direct application closing date, so it's best to get your application in early. In the event of a late or incomplete grade, we can still process your application later as long as you submit it before the closing date.

You are strongly recommended to include a degree from the Guaranteed Admissions Scheme in your preferences. That way, if you didn’t get the marks to grant you entry into your first or second preference you will still receive an offer into an undergraduate program at the University of Newcastle.

You can choose to study some courses in this program and apply to transfer into the degree that was your first preference, depending on your marks.

Find out more

Unfortunately, if you do not successfully complete your Enabling Pathways program, we will be unable to offer you a place in one of our undergraduate degrees.

University of Newcastle degrees provide flexibility with most blending offerings of online and face-to-face courses. However, there are a selection of University of Newcastle degrees that are offered fully online – view our online degrees here.

If you can't see an online degree at the University of Newcastle that suits you, check the relevant Tertiary Admissions Centre in each state to search for online degrees at other institutions.

If you are accepted into an undergraduate program at the University of Newcastle, you may defer admission to the program for a period of up to one year.

Find out more

The University of Newcastle requires all students in 1000 level undergraduate courses to maintain an 80% attendance rate in order to sit their final exam. This only applies to smaller classes like Tutorials, Workshops, Laboratories and does not apply to Lectures.

  • This requirement will NOT apply to students while they are studying an Enabling Pathways program (Open Foundation, Newstep, Yapug).
  • Some undergraduate courses (subjects) above the 1000 level do have an existing attendance requirement, which will be identified in the course outline.

We do recommend you attend as many of your classes as possible as there are well documented links between high attendance and student success.

If you completed your Pathways program more than 8 months ago, apply directly for free through our Direct Entry Portal.

Applicants can apply for all programs except Midwifery and the Bachelor of Medical Science/Doctor of Medicine - Joint Medical Program (JMP). Applicants will need to apply for these programs via UAC.

Please note: If you completed your Pathways program more than 8 months ago, but within the last 5 years and interested in applying for the JMP, consider the Excellence through Equity Pathway to Medicine and select the "Past Students" tab.
