Pathway Application Process

There are two different application processes depending on your status in an Enabling program:

  1. If you have completed or will complete Open Foundation this year you should follow the current enabling students process.
  2. If you have completed Open Foundation, Newstep or Yapug in the previous five years, you should follow the past enabling students process.

Current enabling students

Please note: Current Enabling students applying via the Excellence Through Equity Pathway are not required to have completed the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT).

Submit application

1a. DIRECT APPLICATION FORM - Applications open 1pm, 25 October 2023

Complete a direct application form via the Your Next Move website:

  • Tick the "I would like to be considered for the Excellence Through Equity Pathway to Medicine" box on the preferences page.
  • Select 3 back up degrees as your preference. We recommend that you include a degree from the Guaranteed Admissions Scheme.

Direct applications via the Your Next Move website close 11:59pm Sunday 19 November 2023.

Note: If you completed Open Foundation in Semester 1 and commenced a degree in Semester 2 you will not be able to submit a direct application. Please submit your details via email by 11:59pm Sunday 19 November 2023). You'll then be invited to submit the supporting documents as below.

1b. SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS due by 11:59pm Sunday 26 November 2023

Submit your documents via email, clearly indicating your name, program and student number:

  • Personal Statement (1 page or 2 minute video).
  • Documentation demonstrating socioeconomic disadvantage including financial hardship, and at least 2 of the additional equity indicators

You will receive confirmation of the successful receipt of your documents.

Applications assessed

Your application will be assessed and shortlisting candidates for the final selection process will begin.

Applicants will be advised of the equity review outcome by 8 December 2022. Shortlisting will then follow.

Main round direct offers

DECEMBER 2023

The shortlist will not be confirmed before the main round of direct offers in December.

Please accept an offer into one of your other 3 preferences if you receive one.

If you are later successful in receiving an offer to one of the 6 places via the Excellence Through Equity Pathway, this first acceptance will be automatically resolved.

Shortlist confirmed

DECEMBER 2023

Up to 20 students will be shortlisted based on their academic performance and satisfaction of the equity criteria.

All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application via email.

Selection process

JANUARY 2024

The shortlisted applicants participate in the standard Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (Joint Medical Program) Multiple Skills Assessment (MSA) process.

Final ranking

Final ranking of applicants based on selection process.

Offers made

FEBRUARY 2024

Up to 6 applicants are made an offer into the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (Joint Medical Program). Offers must be accepted within 7 days.

All shortlisted candidates will be notified of the outcome via email.

Past enabling students

If you have graduated from the Open Foundation, Newstep or Yapug programs within the last five years, please follow this application process for the 2024 intake.

Check your eligibility

  • Completed Open Foundation within the last five years
  • Have completed a minimum of one year full-time equivalent tertiary study (80 units)
  • Meet the standard minimum academic criteria
  • Be able to demonstrate socioeconomic disadvantage including financial hardship, and at least two equity indicators from the eligibility list

Register to sit the UCAT ANZ

Registration closes 17 May 2023. UCAT ANZ testing begins 3 July and concludes 12 August 2023.  All enquiries concerning UCAT ANZ should be directed to the UCAT ANZ office
Final bookings will be accepted until Wednesday 31 May at 11:59pm AEST and will incur the late fee of AUD $85.

Applications open mid-August

In the application please tick the box to indicate you completed a University of Newcastle Enabling Program in the last five years and wish to apply to the JMP via the Excellence through Equity Pathway to Medicine. Please also email excelthroughequity@newcastle.edu.au to confirm your application.

Submit a UAC application

Late applications may be accepted by UAC but will incur a late fee

To be considered for the Excellence Through Equity Pathway, please ensure you list all prior educational qualifications on your UAC application including your Enabling Pathways program.

UAC will assess all applicants for academic eligibility.

The Joint Medical Program is now included in the Educational Access Scheme. Through the Educational Access Scheme (EAS) you can get up to four additional adjustment points if you have experienced educational or other disadvantage. For more information about the EAS see here.

Supporting documents

OCTOBER 2023

Eligible students will then be identified and invited to submit supporting documents to be considered for the Excellence Through Equity Pathway:

  • Personal Statement (1 page or 2 minute video)
  • Demonstrate socioeconomic disadvantage including financial hardship, and at least two of the additional equity indicators

Identified students will be sent an invitation in early October, and the supporting documents will be due by Midnight on Sunday 15th October 2023.

Pathway eligibility confirmed

LATE OCTOBER 2023

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of the submission of supporting documents.

If you demonstrate these eligibility criteria in your application, a lower UCAT ANZ threshold will be applied, giving you a greater opportunity for selection for interview.

Selection process

NOVEMBER/DECEMEBER 2023

Applicants who have met the both the academic and equity criteria are invited to participate in the standard Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (Joint Medical Program) Multiple Skills Assessment (MSA) process.

Offers made

JANUARY 2024

Successful students are made an offer into the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (Joint Medical Program). Offers must be accepted within 7 days.
