Surgical Skills Laboratory
Our 100m2 Surgical Skills Laboratory is comprised of 5 workstations, a Maquet surgical demonstration table and 4 teaching stations equipped with both surgical and x-ray tables. Each workstation is fitted with Berchtold surgical lighting, Stryker HD in-light camera and 27” display monitors and wall mounted 65" HDR Professional Display screens for excellent participant visibility.
A dedicated Ziehm Solo FD C-arm X-ray unit is located in the laboratory with the option of an off-site MRI available. The Surgical Skills Laboratory has an integrated Crestron Communication system and high-speed internet throughout the facility which allows real time and recorded videoconferencing capabilities. We also provide a dedicated facility manager and support staff for logistics, planning, on day set up and pack down.
Anatomy Library and Presentation Space
Surgical courses can be broadcast in high definition into the Anatomy library. With two wireless connection projector screens integrated with the Surgical Skill Laboratory. The 50+ seat Anatomy Library can be utilised as a conferencing room and break out area for participants. With catering and tea/coffee services provided.
Anatomy Teaching and Specimen Preparation Laboratory
The facility also comprises of a 60+ person demonstration area. For examination of fixed specimens and a pro-section preparation room. A dry lab teaching space is also available and houses a SECRA large format Visualisation Table.
Anatomy License
The use of human tissue for medical training is essential for gaining authentic surgical experience. The SSTU provides a licenced, well-appointed, and managed facility to support the medical community. The University of Newcastle holds a current NSW Department of Health Anatomy Licence and the exemplary cadaveric specimens sourced for the Surgical Skills Training Unit are pre-screened for pathogens.
