Student and Ambassador Achievements

The Ma & Morley Scholars earn their place in the Program by demonstrating their commitment to the values of the Program. They are dedicated to taking an active role in improving the world around them and consciously progressing their competency as global leaders. Here are just some of the outstanding actions and achievements of the Ma & Morley Scholars outside of the Program in 2022.

  • Brent Cassidy (2018 Scholar) spoke at the Vice-Chancellor’s 2022 Student Welcome and Commencement event, sharing his journey to and through university, assuring students they belong and encouraging them to build support networks
  • Jessica Philbrook (2018 Scholar) was President of the University of Newcastle Students’ Association for the 2022 academic year
  • Luisa Amosa (2019 Scholar) was an Employee of the Year Finalist in the 2022 Business Hunter Awards, as Marketing Manager for Hunt Hospitality
  • Renae Lamb (2019 Scholar) and Liam Scanlan (Ambassador) attended the Alibaba Australia and New Zealand Business Acceleration Conference in Melbourne with Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky AO in Melbourne to celebrate the 5-year anniversary of the company in Australia and the Scholarship Program
  • Sam Clifton (2020 Scholar) received the College of Human and Social Futures, School of Education, 2021 Indigenous Student Award – Secondary
  • Tanisha Holt (2020 Scholar) attended the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in Minnesota USA
  • Maddison Battese (2021 Scholar) held the role of Director of Merchandise with the University of Newcastle Law Students’ Association
  • Jacob Carson (2021 Scholar) elected as Vice President (Finance) on the University of Newcastle Law Students’ Association, Grand Final winner of UNLSA Mooting Competition, Semi-Finalist in UNLSA Negotiation Competition, played a lead role in Judging the Macquaries interactive educational event showcased at NSW Parliament, placed on Dean's Merit List for equal highest mark in Criminal Law, recited a poem written at the University of Newcastle's BeSpoke Reading Night in November
  • Abby Newlin (2021 Scholar) received the Dr Geoffrey Leonard AM Scholarship within the College of Human and Social Futures
  • Tatjana Reid (2021 Scholar) received the College of Human and Social Futures, School of Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Sciences 2021 Kelver Hartley Prize in French, 2021 Kelver Hartley Short Stays prize, was Runner Up in the 2022 Miss Maitland Young Woman competition and will be undertaking a New Colombo Plan Scholarship for 2023 to Japan, Singapore and New Caledonia
  • Leroy Reid (2021 Scholar) was chosen for the University of Newcastle’s 2022 Indigenous Nationals team
  • Tanika Ridgeway (2021 Scholar) travelled to Broome, WA to continue work on the Murru Minya Research Project and curated their website: https://murruminya.com.au/
  • Mitch Whaley (2021 Scholar) travelled to Borneo with Professor Tim Roberts as part of the New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant to visit a proboscis monkey rescue centre in Banjarmasin and experience first-hand the impact of global conservation efforts
  • Skip Willcox (2021 Scholar) choregraphed “Storm Approaching Wangi and Other Desires”, with four professional dance artists and two young dancers, performed to sold-out audiences at the Multi-Arts Pavilion mima in Lake Macquarie
  • Caitlin Ping (2022 Scholar) received a 2022 Port Stephens Mayoral Academic Scholarship
  • Jarrod McEwen-Young (2022 Scholar) played for the Australian Men’s Deaf Basketball team in the Trans-Tasman Deaf basketball series against New Zealand, as well as being chosen for the University of Newcastle’s 2022 Indigenous Nationals team
  • Paycee Cubby (2022 Scholar) and Kobey Potts (2022 Scholar) were chosen for the University of Newcastle’s 2022 Indigenous Nationals team

Ambassadors

  • Olivia Carroll was the MC at the University of Newcastle inaugural Gifting Day, which raised more than $320,000. Olivia presented data surrounding "A relationship between female sex hormones, cellular metabolism and asthma" at the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ) Annual Scientific meeting (held virtually) and was awarded the Ann Woolcock New Investigator award for 2022. She was subsequently invited to give an oral presentation at the Asia Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR) conference in Seoul, South Korea, as part of their young investigator session. Olivia was also very fortunate to travel to Barcelona, Spain last year to attend, and give a poster presentation at, the European Respiratory Society (ERS) conference. Whilst in Europe, a meeting and lab tour was organised with their collaborators at Imperial College, London, and she was invited to give a presentation during this visit. Travel to this conference was partly supported by a career development award that she received from Asthma Australia.
  • Kishaya Delaney was nominated by Professor Megan Davis, Pro Vice-Chancellor Indigenous and Chair of Constitutional Law at UNSW as a changemaker of the future for her work on the Towards Truth Project, which looks at the way in which the law has endorsed draconian policies that have subjugated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Jasmin L’Green travelled to South Korea with the Australian Institute of International Affairs, delivered the 2022 Graduation Speech on behalf of 350 Business and Law Graduates, was admitted as a lawyer of the Supreme court of NSW and was appointed the inaugural Ambassador to the Ma & Morley Scholarship Program Advisory Committee
