Our 2021 Ma & Morley Scholars

"We appreciate yesterday, but we’re looking for a better tomorrow."

- Jack Ma

Kent Anderson2021 has presented us with the opportunity to draw deeply on the shared values of the University of Newcastle - excellence, engagement, equity and sustainability - and the Ma & Morley Scholarship Program to inspire, educate and cultivate the next generation of globally aware and socially conscious Australian leaders.

We started 2021 with a focus on impact, resilience and innovation but have been challenged at each step, as the world continues to adapt to the ongoing impacts of the global pandemic. We understood at the commencement of the year that international travel would not be possible, however, we did not anticipate the long lockdowns many of us faced and their impact on connecting face-to-face.

This Annual Report highlights that, despite these challenges, the Scholars have drawn on the strength of their friendships and shared values to create impact. They have developed their resilience through facing adversity with courage and persistence and applied innovation by connecting each other through virtual offerings. Their leadership journeys continue to navigate unforeseen challenges and unexpected paths towards their goal of making the world a better place.

The University is very grateful to our generous and astute partners. We would like to thank Mr & Mrs Ma, the Jack Ma Foundation and the Alibaba Group for enabling this transformative Program to actively contribute to a more innovative and sustainable world. We are honoured to be working in partnership with Jason Pau, Beth Yu and the teams at the Jack Ma Foundation and the Alibaba Group to support our Scholars in creating a fairer, safer, more respectful and more sustainable world.

We would also like to acknowledge the feedback, guidance and counsel provided by our Ma & Morley Scholarship Program Advisory Committee across the year, as well as the many University stakeholders from all Colleges and Divisions that give generously and freely of their time to engage with and contribute to the success of the Program.

We will continue to look ahead, embrace opportunities, solve challenges and deliver the future we imagine together.

Ma & Morley Scholars - the impact of the program in their words

Ma & Morley Scholars

Three 2018 Ma & Morley Scholars reflect on the impact the Ma & Morley Scholarship program has had on their journey to becoming globally aware and socially conscious leaders.

Activities by date - Stage 1

Stage 1 covers the first year of the Ma & Morley Scholarship Program, when 27 new Scholars joined the Program. The theme of the year was to connect, and the Scholars took part in a range of activities to build connection between themselves, with the Program values and with the wider Ma & Morley family.

Core program activities

The 27 new Ma & Morley Scholars were welcomed to the University through a two-day Welcome Program on Callaghan campus. Scholars participated in sessions that connected them with the values of the Program and with each other, and these sessions were led by current Ma & Morley Scholars. They also participated in a formal Welcome Lunch, where they met and networked with leaders from across the University of Newcastle.

“The thing I love about Ma & Morley, from the first day of the Welcome Program, we all just connected. We all felt safe with each other, and that was such a nice feeling, to be heard and to be understood.”

The University partnered with the Jack Ma Foundation and Hangzhou Normal University to provide eye-opening cultural experiences that echoed Jack Ma’s initial life-changing trip to Australia. These were delivered via a hybrid approach, using both digital and face-to-face activities and included a live virtual tour of the Alibaba Group campus in Hangzhou and an online cultural exchange with students from Hangzhou Normal University.

“During Jason’s presentation, every value in our Scholarship Program was emphasised by the work of the Jack Ma Foundation. The Foundation isn’t just supporting us, they’re also investing in the next generation of African entrepreneurs, who are going to make an incredible difference in their respective nations and regions.”

The annual celebration of the Scholars’ journeys needed to be adapted this year. The Stage 1 and Stage 2 Scholars gathered as a cohort at the Great Hall at the University to reflect on both their challenges and their growth during the year, and celebrate the progress they have made and the opportunities they have been provided. Their stories and messages were shared with the rest of the Ma & Morley family, Program stakeholders and the University community through both the face-to-face event and online livestreaming for those who were unable to join us.

Other leadership program activities

The Scholars were also invited to take part across the year in various activities and learning opportunities, which were linked to the values of the Program, including joining Judy Morley at the Newcastle International Women’s Day Dinner, the Ship to Shore Program with the Schmidt Ocean Institute and a United Nations International Day of Yoga session with David Morley.

Activities by date - Stages 2 and 3

Stage 2 refers to the second year of the Program, when the focus of the Program is to cultivate leadership skills and capabilities. In Stage 3, the third year of the Program, Scholars have the opportunity to create meaningful, impactful change.

Core program activities

Stage 3 Action Project Launch

The Action Project Launch was a primer for the 2021 Action Projects. The day started with an inspiring talk from University of Newcastle alumnus, Luke Hawthorne, an award-winning lawyer in a leading international law firm doing meaningful work connected with the Program’s values. The Scholars then broke into groups to work with their project teams and begin planning their Action Projects.

Stage 2 Adaptive Leadership Intensive

Due to the COVID-19 lockdown, we were unable to deliver the Adaptive Leadership Intensive as a face-to-face engagement opportunity, and instead worked to deliver the Intensive as a remote learning experience. The course, delivered by Harvard University-trained facilitators, included a session that provided Scholars with ways to navigate the current moment and explore the role leadership can play in the current environment. We offered multiple modes of delivery, which involved connecting physically with the world, as well as offering practical activities throughout the sessions. We also sent the Scholars small care packages for the session, which included a short message of encouragement from another fellow Scholar.

“It impacted me by grounding myself again, and really bringing my mind back from all of the panic of COVID-19 right now, to focus on observing and appreciating what I have and not want I don’t.”

Stage 2 & 3 Cultural Immersion on Country

Scholars met on Worimi Country to experience Aboriginal lore, culture and connection to Country. The immersion experience was hosted by the Murrook Culture Centre and included a formal welcome to Country, the Broken Journey workshop, a bush resource walk and quad bike tour of Worimi Country.

“The knowledge I learnt was invaluable as well. Specifically, about the plants and nature during the tour of Murrook, also on the quad bike tour on the sand dunes and the ‘Broken Journey’ presentation.”
Stage 2 & 3 Scholar

The annual celebration of the Scholars’ journeys was adapted for the current social context and health environment. The Stage 2 Scholars were invited to the face-to-face Gala event held at Callaghan campus, while the Stage 3 Scholars were encouraged to live stream into the event.

Other leadership program activities

Hosted by the Ma & Morley Scholars, the Revolutionary Couch Potatoes was an opportunity for like-minded students from across the University of Newcastle who want to change the world to sit down and watch a movie together with the Ma & Morley Scholars, based around the Ma & Morley Scholarship Program’s values. The March Revolutionary Couch Potatoes event was held on Harmony Day and covered the topic of ‘Refugee Experiences of Settling in Australia’. The screening and discussion were based around the film Constance on the Edge, and Ma & Morley Scholars from refugee backgrounds hosted a panel discussion at the event.

The Scholars met formally and informally throughout the year for peer-led support and knowledge-sharing. One of the activities hosted by the Program during the COVID-19 lockdown was a weekly catch up on a digital platform called Gather. Students created virtual characters, and were able to play games, chat and explore the virtual space together.

Peer-led Program delivery

Scholars were able to hone their leadership and facilitation skills by delivering elements of the incoming Scholars’ Welcome and Leadership Workshops.

2021 Digital Zine Project

A zine is a homemade short (in this case digital) magazine. A workshop was held during the first half of the year with University of Newcastle alumnus and freelance multimedia storyteller, Conor Ashleigh. This provided Scholars with a mixture of practice-based and theoretical activities that touched on the four mediums that we encouraged them to engage with during the Zine Project -  photography, digital design, video and audio. The Scholars were also invited to take part in various activities and learning opportunities related to the values of the Program, including joining the Digital Zine project, where Scholars took part in creating podcasts, articles and videos for the 2021 Digital Zine.

Learnings from 2021

2021 has been a year of impact, resilience and innovation. The key learnings from the year that will be applied to improve the Program moving forward include:

Change is constant - the need to embrace and adapt to change will continue in the Ma & Morley Scholarship Program, within the University of Newcastle, and as a nation within a global community. A strong understanding of, and commitment to, our values will continue to guide the Program, with agile flexibility of delivery when required ensuring key outcomes are met.

Focus on what you can control - managing expectations of fixed outcomes with constantly moving goalposts due to changing health regulations is counterproductive. Identifying and delivering fundamental concepts and core activities in the best possible format within the ideal time frame is a worthwhile goal.

Return on investment – finding the balance between competing priorities and investing in well-being and selfcare is always a challenge. The more time, energy and emotion Scholars invested in the Program, the more they learnt and grew. Staying connected to the Program and each other was crucial to the Scholars’ wellbeing.

"The way that I have participated in my classes has been altered from the fact that I felt like I belonged. I sit in the front row, and I engage with my lecturers. If I wasn’t in the Program, I probably would have sat in the back corner and not been as confident to speak to other people… It’s nice to know that you’re special, but it’s good to realise that you’re special because of how you see the world, not because of how the world sees you. Everybody has something to contribute, whether they have been lucky enough to realise it yet or not."
