2022 has presented us with the opportunity to reflect and celebrate 5 years of the Ma & Morley Scholarship Program, which aims to inspire, educate and cultivate the next generation of globally aware and socially conscious Australian leaders.
2022 Ma and Morley Scholars
Professor Kent Anderson Foreword by Professor Kent Anderson
We started 2022 with a focus on action, reciprocity and growth and have witnessed the Scholars embrace a full range of activities and opportunities, following two difficult years of lockdowns and restrictions. Re-emerging from home to connect face-to-face has been a curious process and we continue to learn what ‘living with COVID’ looks like.
This Annual Report highlights that the Scholars have drawn on the strength of their friendships and shared values to create impact through action. They have developed their understanding of the importance and reward of reciprocity and experienced growth through shared experiences and new learnings. Their leadership journeys continue to navigate unforeseen challenges and unexpected paths towards their goal of making the world a better place.
The University is very grateful to our generous and astute partners. We would like to thank Mr & Mrs Ma, the Jack Ma Foundation and the Alibaba Group for enabling this transformative Program to actively contribute to a more innovative and sustainable world. We are honoured to be working in partnership with Jason Pau, Beth Yu and the teams at the Jack Ma Foundation and the Alibaba Group to support our Scholars in creating a fairer, safer, more respectful and more sustainable world.
We would also like to acknowledge the feedback, guidance and counsel provided by our Ma & Morley Scholarship Program Advisory Committee across the year, as well as the many University stakeholders from all Colleges and Divisions that give generously and freely of their time to engage with and contribute to the success of the Program.
We will continue to look ahead, embrace opportunities, solve challenges and deliver the future we imagine together.

Learnings from 2022
2022 has been a year of action, reciprocity and growth. The key learnings from the year that will be applied to improve the Program moving forward include:
Actions speak louder than words – leadership requires the courage to speak the truth and act, not only talk about issues and challenges that we all face on a daily basis. When an issue arises, seek out the facts, identify the core issue and implement positive impact by responding to the need. There are many local and global challenges that require our attention. Having clear values with an aligned purpose is always a strong anchor.
Reciprocity is a state of mutual exchange, with the categorisation of an action by its motivation and consequence in relationship to another.By supporting each other and out communities, we all benefit: it is a simple framework that allows us to understand another way of being, how to support individually and collectively, rather than just taking. It benefits the community and sustains the environment.
Growth is only possible when you move out of your comfort zone – by continually challenging ourselves to create positive impact, we honour Jack Ma’s dream to make the world a better place. As Viktor Frank reminds us: “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” Choose wisely!

The Ma & Morley Scholarship Program gifted me the opportunity to be part of something much bigger than a degree or a nine-to-five job: a family of globally aware and socially conscious leaders.
